I, and most everyone else who reads this board, know the dangers of running to lean and the dreaded knock retard. I feel I am running too rich. While I know this is robbing me of maybe 10-15 rwhp is slightly rich better than slightly lean? I get black soot deposits in no time in my corsa indy pro-tips, could any of you air/fuel ratio experts tell of the dangers of running too rich? Are there any? Thanks
That soot is normal. Check your plugs-that may tell the tale. The best way to go is a few dyno runs and a good tuner. The guys at KPD tuned my buddy for 20 more rear hp/tq-and his fuel curve was already good!
I doubt if it is running too rich all of the time. Closed loop systems, unless faulty won't let this happen. What you, probablly, are seeing is the PCM strategy to prolong the cats life. What does happen is the PCM will go very rich when the cats are hot to protect them. A dyno with an A/F probe will give you better information.
In extreme cases, running too rich can wash your cylinder walls with fuel, which can cause excessive wear. However, what you describe is typical of most C5’s I’ve seen and no big deal.
When I first started modifying my C5, I installed a Blackwing, larger MAF, and LS6 intake. I continued to have soot on my Corsa’s and when I had the car on the dyno, the A/F ratio was off the chart lean with over 9 degrees of knock retard
As stated above, extreme will wash lubrication off the cylinder walls. More likely would be carbon build-up and fouled plugs. Factory pre-sets tends toward the rich side as this is the safer of the two.
