Default Brake pads

After a few (road track) driving schools in my C5, e.g. LimeRock, NHIS, I've now gotten to the point where the stock pads are not sufficient - too much fade. Are there any better pads that are as the GM stock pads on the street, especially with cold brakes, but hold up much better on the track? If so, what are their noise and dust characteristics? I'd rather not have to switch to track pads at the time of the events; and I only go to about 4 driver's schools a year.

Also, even though my pads still have considerable thickness left, my front rotors got pretty gouged, around the middle, to the point where I'll replace them shortly. (with GM DuraStop?) What causes that?

I faced the same thing you are. Rotors groove when brake pads go over their designed temperature. OEM pads don't have a very high temperature ceiling.

I use EBC reds as they have as good as OEM bite cold but have a much higher operating range. I would stick with stock rotors as they are tough as nails and are a good value. If you want to get a lot of bang for the buck get a set of DRM cooling ducts for the front. It will extend the life of everything considerably and improve your on track performance.

GM rotor part numbers are:
10445856 rotor front right
10445857 rotor front left
10445858 rotor rear right
10445859 rotor rear left

and can be ordered from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ for a good delivered price.

Pads are avaialble at: http://www.tirerack.com

and ducts at: http://www.dougrippie.com/drm/new_products.htm
