I have a 50th Anniversary Coupe - no mods at all - and I get a resonance in the exhaust system when moving slowly (I know, don't do that :) ) in traffic or just pulling away. Happens exactly at 900 rpm when pulling. I have 9000 miles on it because I love driving it :D
My dealer says "they all do this - it's normal" and I think he's full of it.
Sounds like the "can of marbles" rattle that we get with manual transmissions when starting from a stop. Did you play the video you got with your Vette? It mentions this sound and I think has an audio of it. I know - a $50,000 car shouln't make such a sound.
Thanks for the suggestion, I don't recall it on a video I think we got a CD. I'll check it out. I suppose if it is a general fault I can always upgrade to a Bola or Corsa :D
I ran the CD - no relevant comment that I could find. I'm taking the car in on Wednesday so I'd appreciate any help from anyone. The dealer already fitted a "dynamic balancer" but it made no difference. Their documentation quoted a 70% improvement  so clearly they thought somethign was wrong.
It's really annoying when pulling away - nasty little rasp or rattle, like a loose baffle on older systems
I have a 50th A4 Convertible. I have the same annoying resonance. I noticed it while going up a fairly steep hill at around 40mph. It annoyed me enough that I dropped the Auto into 3rd, and kept going.
The noise just reinforced my thoughts of getting more gear. ;)

Well I get that sound in my 6 spd... but he has an auto ! Shouldn't be the same sound I'd think !
Well, we got an audio CD with the car as a 7-minute instructional manual - actually played it sitting in the car, very helpful. It didn't mention the resonance.
We also got a promotional CD and that didn't mention it either
We also got a video and tonight I'm going to sit down and watch it very carefully :)
The noise that you are hearing on the A4 is due to engine torsional loads being transmitted through the exhaust system, causing the tailpipes to resonate (like a guitar string) due to the stiffness of the exhaust. You will notice that the noise is worse with the A/C on.It is not only on the 2003,but all years, some worse than others. Some dont have it at all.
GM has not addressed this and does not have a fix for it.Unfortunately,as another member stated, the only way to get rid of it is to install an aftermarket exhaust.
The noise addressed in the video or CD pertains to the tranny noise in the M6...
Oops, sorry David. I guess I didn't catch the fact that you have an auto-tranny car. I do drive briefly through Mira Mesa on my way to Scripps Ranch. In fact, I was on 15 South when a rock made a good-sized chip in my windshield a while back. Fortunately, my insurance company cheerfully authorized its replacement soon after.
Look for me as well; you won't miss the Borla Stinger quad-tips!
