Default Engine oil analysis

Every time I change the oil, I send in a sample for analysis. I was wondering how many other members where also doing it.

Please post what lab you send your sample to, ( I use Blackstone Labs).

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Last year I used Terry Dyson who had a lab that works with him do it. However, he is now working with Blackstone so I will likely send it there this time. Do you get TBN as well? Have you posted results?

I’ve been sampling since day one, but I don’t have scanner to post them. I could fax them to someone who could host them if they have the bandwidth.

Kevin
FYI, I dont't get TBN.

Kevin,

I haven't used Blackstone yet, but I seem to remember that they put all your history for a particular car on one sheet. Does your last analysis have the history?

I've been doing oil analysis on my cars and the rest of my family's cars for over a year and a half now. It's very educational! I highly recommend using Terry Dyson and Blackstone, that is an awesome package. I get a local lab to do my analysis, and then send the results to Terry Dyson for his interpretation. He is extremely helpful and I've learned a lot from him.

Can I ask a small favor from those of you who have done oil analysis? Could you please send me your results, or go here and post them in the used oil analysis section:
http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php

I'm one of the administrators on that oil message board, and I'd love to see more reports on the LS1/LS6.

I voted no.

My question is, what are you going to differently based on the results?

Results can lead to many things you would do differently. For instance, a high silicone level may indicate dirt getting by your filter. If running something like a K&N, it may need re-oiling or may not be sealed correctly. Coolant in the oil is inidicative of other problems that may not have surfaced yet, such that catching them early could prevent bigger problems later. Oil analysis will also show whether your oils additive package is depleted or holding up so well you can run farther on an oil change. It will also tell you how your filter is doing, whether your car is out of tune, etc. etc. etc. So while the oil may not lead to you another oil, it may lead to other preventative maintenance that has the potential to save you from bigger problems. Besides that, I find it interesting :yesnod:

Doing oil analysis will show you guys that 3k intervals with synthetics are not necessary, and you can easily double your interval without shortening your engine's lifespan.

Never had my oil analyzed. How much does the kit cost? Where can I get it. I've been changing my oil around 6,000 miles and using a K&N racing oil filter. I could probably go longer, but 6k is a good rule of thumb for me!

Blackstone has a web site and will send you a kit for free. You pay when you submit the sample. Make sure you also ask for TBN analysis which is extra, this will tell you how well your oil is holding up. You can also specify Terry Dyson analysis for an extra $10 and Terry will explain each reading and provide more insight to the analysis then you will get directly from Blackstone.
