Default Need Help Rebuilding Calipers

I bought a caliper rebuild kit to replace all the seals in my front and rear calipers (just had them powder coated). When I opened the package to and read the instructions it said that "a removal tool is required for the seals".

Do I need this? Where can I get one? Otherwise, can someone tell me how to remove the seals without without the tool?

you don't need any special GM tool to pull the seals you can just get the little dental type pick tooks at Sears or auto store. Don't sratch the bore. DO NOT asemble with oil for lubricant use brake fluid. I take it you got the pieces?

OK, so how did you get them apart to start with? I just purchased brand new calipers for powder coating and I can't get the damn pistons out of them. I have tried air to no avail. Now I am looking for a hydraulic pump of some type.

John,

Yes, I received the brackets - Thanks!. I am hoping to complete this job today so that I can send the take-offs back to you. Do you want me to paint them black before I send them?

Put the bleeder back in and use compressed air where the fluid line would be, clamp a rag and small board over the first hole after that piston is removed. Make shure your fingers are not in the path of the pistons! If your kit came with special lube use it. I used a bearing press to push the pistons back into the bores with the new seals.

I have always been able to get them out with compressed air. Be careful - if you use a lot of pressure the will really fly out.

I just used a small tire pump that was plugged into my cigarette lighter. The rear ones took almost 30lbs of air pressure to finally push them out. The front ones are a little trickier. The front calipers have two cylinders and the pistons dont want to come out at the same time. So after one came out I had to push it back in slightly and hold it there. Then I pumped air back in until the other came out. I then pulled the first on out, but it is a juggling act with the front.

Minimum - DOT 3. Synthethic DOT3/4 is better.

I've used Valvoline Syntech for about 4 years in my C4. I'll likely adapt it to my C5 as well. It works good, can be found just about everywhere and isn't too expensive.

Not as good as the full out race fluids so keep that in mind as well. Speed has a price. Motul600 is better from what I have heard, but I have never used it.

I tried the Ford stuff but didn't like it. Switched back to VS.

A plastic dental pick is the thing to use. They just don't want you using a knife or other sharp metal item to pry it out and then scratch the piston or bore area. That would be bad. Use a rag to cushion the piston when that puppy comes out hard. Can be very painful if higher pressures required as previously mentioned.

Got them apart, and used the end of a small plastic tie wrap to get out the seal. Pops right out.
