Default Caliper Guide Pin Bolts - Replace???

Why do I have to replace the caliper guide pin bolts when the caliper is removed? It is only tightened to 23 ft/lbs when installed.

I would have thought that if I just put some LockNut "Red" on it before intstall it will be plenty secure.

What are your thoughts?

I have heard arguements both ways that they can't be re-used and why not loc-tite, I just bought new ones when I replaced my calipers. I don't see why you can't loc-tite them, just made me feel better. :banghead:

The service manual states to replace them. I am getting ready to install some new rotors and I have ordered some new bolts - better safe than sorry.

Where do I get new ones? What is the grade and size of this bolt?

I asked at my local Chevy dealer's parts department and they told me that they did not have a part number for it.

I bought mine at the chevy dealer. They have to zoom in on the caliper to get the part #. The part number is GM#14067559.

Those bolts on my calapers have been off and on 50 or more times and I haven't replaced them yet. A speck of lock-tite works fine. There is NO need to replace them.

What you say is probably true. There may not be either a stretch factor or metal fatique involved at 23 ft/lbs. I think that that the initial LockTite Red that is on a new bolt may be the reason to replace it. So therefore if I were to put more of the Red on it before intallation, it would probably be put back up to specs and reusable.

Any knowledgeable technicians or engineers in this group to give comment?

The manual states they should be replaced. I believe it is to simply freshen the fastener lock that is on the threads. Don't use red Loctite, you may never get them apart again. Use Loctite 242, which allows future disassembly. I replaced them the first time on my 90, but then re-used them after that with no problems. On my 02, I am going to re-use the caliper bolts with Loctite 242 after thoroughly cleaning the threads.

I just asked my Technician about this last week. He instructed me to reuse the old bolts and don't even worry about loctite. Just torque to specs and all will be fine.
Personally, I am going to reuse the bolts and add a small dab of low strength Loctite.

Don't replace them. Just use BLUE loctite and torque them. Do the same on the caliper basket bolts also. The caliper basket bolts are $5.70 something from the dealer EACH. Ripoff! :flag
