ok, so check this out. my backup lights are not working on my vette. The bulbs are not burned out, since they light up when i lock/unlock the car with the keyless remote
however, when i put the 6 spd tranny into reverse they do not come on!!! electrical problem? anyone experience this or know what part i need to buy? help.........
This is a fairly common problem - same thing happened to me about 18 months ago.
The problem is the backup lamp switch on the tranny has gone bad. In my case it shorted and blew the backup lamp circuit fuse. The switch is physically on the tranny on the upper passenger side - when you put the car in Reverse gear, the switch is closed and allows the light circuit to complete.
It's a real easy fix since the switch simply unscrews from the tranny. Mine was changed under warranty, but if you had to do it yourself it should be pretty easy.
well, I went to the Chevy dealership today and got the part. I could have swore the parts guy told me $70 and i about pooped myself, but I knew I had to have it, so I said i'd take it. I went to the cashier and come to find out it only cost me $17.60, plus tax. He said seventeen, i thought he had said seventy...lol.......whew!!!
anyway, now that I have the part #, here's the information on it if any of you guys need it when your switch goes out. gmpartsdirect.com has it at about 1/2 price of the dealership, but you have to wait on shipping. http://www.gmpartsdirect.com

After you replace the switch, be sure to check the proper fuse if the lights still don't come on. As I noted above, my faulty switch caused a short to ground and blew the fuse, which if I recall there is a separate fuse for the Backup Circuit vs. the Approach Lights Circuit. The fuse is in the passenger footwell block.
