While driving my 98 under loaded conditions(like going up a hill while giving it little throttle), my transmission seems to "SHUTTER". It seems like the torque converter is not locking up. Is this problem a minor or major transmission problem? Before I take it in for service I would like to know what I'm dealing with! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I doubt that it is the torque converter, they will lock by the pcm under normal driving conditions, you probably need a rebuild, does it slip in 2 or 3rd? clutch bands have stretched. if it is a rebuild have them build it to a stage 4 flp or better, then you never have to worry again. or just order the flp stage 4 I think its 2000.00. also might be time to consider other mods while you have it apart.
If the converter is stock" there may be a problem. Some aftermarket converter's give a light shutter under different conditions. :skep: If it's stock I would take it to the dealer to be checked out. :yesnod:

Re: torque converter question, PLEASE HELP!!! (Mitch C)
After market one may do this since they don't lock up at quickly. I have a Yank and when I'm at very low RPM(1500), and traveling 40-50 mph (est) mine shutters. It seems to happen in very low torque situations when the A4 is in 4th gear. If you step on the gas to get a downshift it immediately goes away. Also I noticed It tends to happen on hot summer days (90-100) when the engine looses about 10 hp and obvious some torque.
Would a dirty filter or old fluid cause this? I haven't changed the transmission fluid in a while. Also, the fluid temp has never gone over 225 degrees. I just can't believe that I need a transmission rebuild after only 60,000 miles. With the exception of a few good burnouts I have basically "babyed" this car. Has anyone else had to replace their A4 transmission with low mileage?
Changing the fluid and filter wouldn't hurt, the tranny in my truck was shifting funny at 35,000 miles (it felt like someone was kicking the back of my seat) and the dealer flushed the fluid and changed the filter and it's been great for 30,000 miles now.
My transmission is slipping now and the car only has 16000 miles. Sounds to me that you have a problem with your torque converter. It could also be a problem with your torque converter clutch solenoid. Most likely unless you are having a problem with the converter not unlocking at lower speeds it won't be the solenoid.
