Hi guys! I don't post too often, but I've been reading lots of good stuff in here. Thanks for sharing all of your info! Personally, I do not own a C5, but come here often to help my brother out who just got his last year. (He does not use the internet.... imagine that!!!)
I could use some suggestions....
In the spring, I've been asked to work on my brother's 2003 AE (sure wish it was MINE! :( ). He does not race the car, but wants to upgrade the looks of his brakes. He's got the red Z06 calipers already, and wants to add some drilled and/or slotted rotors on also. My brother is actually fairly conservative, and not into racing, but wants the look of those types of rotors.
What do you suggest? He's leaning towards the GM performance rotors, because he prefers to stay with a "stock-type" item. I see Gene at Fred Beans has them reasonably priced, and also GM Parts Direct has them. He may also get the ceramic pads.
Also, there are also some rotors at West Coast Corvette that caught my eye. The C5/Z06 Wilwood performance rotor package is under $850, and there is also a Baer rotor set for under $800. Baer also has a set with 14" rear rotors for a little more. Is that only for larger wheels? He was thinking of upgrading the wheels too, but no decision on that yet.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I'll be working on this car in the spring, but wanted to get the parts lined up for when he brings his car out. (He lives about 300 miles away, but will be spending a few days at my place this spring.) Like I said, I wish it were my car..... :) !
I forgot to mention, the Baer rotors from West Coast Corvette are called "EradiSpeed". and are a 2 piece rotor up front, and 1 pc in rear, unless you go up to 14" in rear, then they are two piece rotors in front and rears.
Are they worth the price? Any comparison to the GM performance rotors?
I have been looking also, did you check out the DBA's that LG sells and the Powerslot? I am honestly so confused at this point I am not sure what to get. But I am also looking for a nice zinc washed rotor that will not corrode and looks nice.
I have been looking for a while too. Most of my friends but the Eradispeeds. I am pretty hard on my brakes though and I have heard of a lot of them cracking pretty soon. I dont want to waste my money.
The Wilwoods seem to be pretty comparable to the Baers.
If http://www.stopforce.com made matching rear rotors also, I would order a set today. They are POrsche rotors and the holes are cast in when the rotor is made. Therefore, they are less likely to crack.
The SCCA T1 guys use the stock brakes calipers and rotors with racing pads. I am not sure BIG brakes are needed as much as they cost. Yes the BIG brake kit we stop you faster and look really:cool: but do you really need them??
I use NAPA rotors on my stock calipers with Hawk + pads on the street and PFC 01 pads for track days.
NEW rotors from NAPA:
RF - UBP 86700
LF - UBP 86701
LR - UBP 86702
RR - UBP 86703
about $115 for all 4 rotors with a AAA discount.
I am not easy on my brakes either and go quite deep into corners before braking. So what ever you decide too do, season your rotors properly so they dont honeycomb or crack from heat shock and you have to replace them again.
Thanks for all of the great info guys.... ;) I'll be printing out much of the info here and sending it to my brother (remember, I told you he does not use the internet! ) so he can look it over and make some decisions. Any other suggestions? It's really appreciated! ;) :yesnod:
I am by no means an expert but the picture of the Baer 14" rotor setup on http://store.yahoo.com/corvetteforum/baererrear14.html looks like the pads are only gripping 50% of the rotor surface. The bigger brakes shoud disipate heat better but I would think that the rotors would rust or corode badly where the pad doesn't touch.
Does anyone have this kit installed and drive their car on all weather conditions?

Hopefully soon to be Z06 owner
Those rotors are zinc coated so they will not rust in the unswept area of the rotor. However you are correct that the pad only touches half of the rotor face. The advantage is the added leverage you get on the rotor and greater cooling ability.. But this being said it doesn't seem like any of the guys that run their cars on the track use this set up
Although there are many options available for brake rotors running from approximately $500 for four one-piece rotors to $5,000 for an entire brake system. I tried to put a system on my Z06 that would offer a durability - performance improvement and an aesthetic improvement.
For the fronts I chose StopFORCE two-piece, aluminum hat, drilled, Porsche derived rotors. Approximate cost - $600
For the rears I chose EradiSpeedPlus 1 two-piece, 14 inch, aluminum hat, drilled and slotted rotors. Approximate cost - $600
Although Eradispeed sells two-piece, aluminum hat, drilled and slotted front rotors, they have not proven to perform as well as the StopFORCE rotors. The EradiSpeed front rotors have been documented to develop stress cracks around the drilled holes over time. This is not an issue with the rear rotors, due to the fact that the front rotors and calipers do the vast majority of the braking.
I had just recently purchased the Baer Eradispeed +1 and should arrive this week. I went with this set up because of the new 19/20 rims I had bought. I didn't like the small stock size rotors in the rear with the 20" rims. It makes the stock rotors look really small.
Pumba - The StopForce and Eradispeed combo sounds interesting. I read the StopForce info on their website, and they sure sound like a winner. As for the Eradispeeds on the rear, I'll mention that one to my brother, as he is thinking about upgrading his wheels also, and is looking to go an inch larger all around.
Gary,
Here's what my front Eradispeeds looked like after about 1000 miles
And here's what the rears looked like after the same mileage
They look pretty good from about 8' away, but when you get close . . . .
And of course the person who is trying to sell them to you doesn't tell you how they are going to rust up on the insides.
JL - Thanks for the info and pics on the Eradispeed rotors. From your signature info, you are using the +1 rears, right? I can see that only about half of the rotor is actually wiped by the pad. Did you have any problems with clearance at all?

Baer offers their Eradispeed line (including the plus 1's) in a slotted only version but you have to specify them when you order. BTW, DBA is who makes the rotor blanks for Baer. HTH
