Default oil pooling in intake

Has anyone else seen oil pooling in the bottom of the intake behind the throttle body? If so what could be my problem?

PCV filter. It is, unfortunately-normal-but reduces your power. Use search function for "PCV mod" and there are a few remedies for it. Good Luck!

It's coming through the well engineered PCV system. There have been a number of posts about this problem and various catchcan-type fixes people have come up with to collect the oil before it enters the intake manifold.

The best cure is to convert to the LS6 PCV system, adding an in-line filter per the mod link above.

Buck, it is different as it's contained within the valley section. There have a been a couple of posts illustrating the swap. I believe I have a series of pics of it if you'd like to see them. However, I've heard from a few who've done it that the swap doesn't completely fix the problem.

A buddy and I helped each other out on our h/c jobs and both our intakes were soaked with oil. I decided to install a GReddy catch can that does catch quite a bit of oil.

Here's what it caught after about 800 miles.

Here's another style, the PDM catch can.

Found what may be a fix for this problem. GM makes a orfice type pcv valve for this problem on the 5.3L trucks. The 5.3L and the LS1 take the same valve so maybe this will help the problem. I put mine in today and will keep you posted. ( part # is 12572717 )

There are no other parts to change just the valve itself. No problem at all!!!! :hurray:

Do you have any other documentation on this... this sounds interesting. Been following threads on here for some time on this and would like a simple solution if possible.

How could a different valve fix it? Most of the oil is in the form of vapor as it makes it's way into the intake. This is why the little catch filters don't work very well. They catch some, but not very much.

:iagree:

Fortunatly I do not have this problem with my 03. I suppose the ring change in 01 solved this problem. However I have been thinking about this a lot. The problem actually occurs because of the shallow valve covers on the LS1. The LS6 take air from the valley pan instead but I have still heard of a few of these conversions not working well. The pre 01 block would require some dremeling to make the LS6 pan fit correctly this appears to be a major PIA. But what if you put on some taller C5-R valve covers?? You would have to relocate the coil packs, this could be a major PIA as well.

Just some thoughts to ponder. :troll

The ls6 style PCV is better, but only some of the issues are related to the valve cover based ventilation (they do have baffels in the valve covers already). If the motor has blowby, you are going to get oil vapor in the PCV no mater where you pull the air from. The ls6 change was mainly to address oil caused by pulling high lateral Gs.
