I just received my Hurst shifter from LAPD this week and was wondering about the extra springs that come with the shifter. Are these the soft springs?Which spring combo did you like the best? Did you use the stops?
i had my hurst installed 1 year ago, i don't know what springs they used but they were very stiff at first and have since loosened up. the shop that did this i do not beleive used lock tight and my front and rear stops did become a problem. last week i had the stops removed and it works much better now. love the hurst, good choice
I use the soft soft springs with a little bit of tension on them. Works smooth, I have had overtravel problems with the dealer not adjusting the stops correctly. Read the instruction and follow them to the letter, use the stops.
Follow the directions. It comes with one soft small spring and one big hard spring on each side (i think). I thought that was wayyyyy too hard to row. It came with extra springs...i used the soft big and the soft small on each side. I thought it was perfect...still very firm. And people say they loosen over time...if thats the case, i'll put the firmer ones in then. You'll enjoy it though.
They were extremely stiff at first. They have since loosened up. I don't know if the stiffer springs will center it any quicker. I'm using the softest springs and it centers quickly enough that all I have to do is push forward to go to 3rd.
I used the soft springs in mine, and I wouldn't do it any other way. They are plenty strong enough to self center from second to third.
As far as the stops go, I don't use them. If you go to the Tremec website, and look at the info on the T-56, you will see an area for FAQ's. The second question is about after market shifters. It clearly states to NOT use stops since the T-56 has built in stops. In my opinion, that means that you risk not fully engaging the gear if you use stops. Not good.

Thanks! That was interesting reading. I noticed that the FAQ refered to the M12 (Z06) tranny as having the stops. NO mention was made about the M6 having stops.
As a matter of fact that web site never mentions the M6 at all.
I have read somewhere that ONLY the M12 has the internal shift stops. Does anyone know for sure?
I am certain that it applies to both M6 and M12 transmissions. M6 an M12 are Gm designations not Tremec. There all T-56 to Tremec. Like any company they brag on their "best" models. The difference between M6 an M12 is the gear ratio's. Initially there were also some differences in syncro's, but I think they have gone away now.
I had a 2000 Coupe with the M6 and am confident that the case and shift mechanism are the same. Here are some pic's of my Z06 getting the trans repaired.
