Default Coolant Temperature

On my NEW C5 while parking it in the garage it was idling for some time and the coolant temperature read 226F. Is this OK?

When does the fan kick on?

Mine did that the other day. The fans turn on @ 228 or so.

Good question. As per GM the cooling fan should turn on at 226. I had a San Diego dealer service department fax me the specs on the cooling system. I have a 2004 C5 and was also worried about the fan not turning on. Sure enough I let mine just sit at idle and at 226 the fan turns on. :hurray:

Normal operating range for LS1/C5 is 200-210. 1st fan comes on at 225-235 and off at 219. 2nd fan will come on with A/C or at 235 and off at 226. Per Shop Manual.

Normal but too hot IMO. Lower fan settings and T-stat will help.

This is normal and nothing to worry about. No need to go out and modify the system either. There is nothing to gain by having the car run cooler unless you have heavy duty modifications to your engine or are running a Super Charger. :yesnod:

So re-programming it with LS1 edit to have the fans turn on at 215F would not help performance?

Here in Arizona it can go over 110F in the summer. It is much easier on the motor and other accessories if the engine wasn't running at 226F.

Hi and welcome! It is designed to run that hot. You may talk your dealer into lowering the fan on/off settings. I believe that if you took it back out and drove it -you would see it get cooler as you got it going and established the proper air flow. Follow the factory advice with coolant and oil and don't void your warentry. If ya just gota mess with it put a cooler theromstat in it. Mine has 700mi on it and the last time I put it away the engine temp was 200 and the engine oil temp was 208. On a 40 degree day
