I know I have read post on this before, and I did a search with no results
On a road trip this weekend I heard the "chime" that normally coincides with information in the DIC. I looked down and saw no information in the DIC, so I scanned the gauages. Everything was normal including the fuel gage reading just under 1/2. I continued to drive with for a few more miles and I noticed the fues gauge had dropped to its lowest postions, slightly bellow red. I checked the range under the fuel category of the DIC and there was no information. It did not read low nor did it give a range. Less then 5 minutes of diriving later the "check gauges light" illuminated both on the Analogue instrument cluster as well s in the HUD. In addition the words LOW FUEL appeared in the DIC. I pressed reset on the DIC and cleared the HUD as well as the DIC message however the remaining red "Check Gauges" light remained on the instrument cluster. I placed the car in nuetral, shut of the ingine, and restarted only to find that the problem remained. I refuled at the next available station and the tank held 12 gallons. Once restarting the problem remained. Fuel gauge below empty, "Check Gauges" illuminated, Low Fuel message In DIC. After about 15 more minutes of driving everything cleared up and was back to normal and remains so today.
What is the problem?
2002 MN6 Coupe with 20,000 Miles
Amoco 93 Fuel 90% of the time (Shell on occasion)
I have the same problem only worse! My gauge does not work more often than it does. I have changed gas stations and brands of gas many times and am using 2-20oz bottles of Chevron Techron per tankfull as suggested when I posted this same problem 6 months ago. Anybody have any better suggestions as I have gone through 2 cases of Chevron Techron with NO results. Thanks Mike
I had the same thing happen...it would drop to zero for no reason. I took it to the dealer twice and since the second time it has not happened again. I've read a number of thoughts on the Forum about what could be causing this, but since the dealer replaced the sending unit about 1 1/2 years ago, I haven't had any further problems. I use Arco gas but I don't think that has much to do with it.
If you get into this problem again, just look at your trip odometer, and if you've changed it with the gas fill-up, you can get an idea of how much farther you can drive...the average mpg times a full tank of gas will give you the range, then deduct how far you've already driven. Though scary, if you have an idea of how much should be left, you're probably not going to be caught without gas.
Also, sometimes it would go back to normal when I would just put in more gas.
there is NO SOLUTION even if u get it fixed by replacing both sender units it will still come back i heard there was a CF member the replaced the unit twice and still had the same PROBLEM just live with it I DID for the last 20 K miles its not that bad :D
I'm happy for you this no big deal, but it bothers me! I can't believe there is no solution for this problem! This is a C5 Corvette for Gods sake, it should work!!! (sorry about the rant) Mike
The earlier cars required a change in the sending units. Supposedly, GM fixed the problem in 2000 or 2001. If you get the problem after they "supposedly" fixed it, they reprogram the PCM software. I have an 02 and it started acting up last fall. My friends 2000 did about the same time. I have a feeling that the change to winter blend caused the problem, but am unsure. I will likely get the software change when I get the car out again, but it appears from the folks here that it won't resolve the problem either. I am beginning to think that the only fix is a different manufacturer, and since I won't put up with this kind of BS problem for very long, I may just dump the car for some other form of four wheel entertainment. Are you listening GM??????? :mad
GM has gotten some form of a legal inquiry into the matter in Canada. I read the report on it, basicly its the contacts in the fuel tank, they are a cheap metal (nickel?) when the majority of sensors are silver which isnt sensitve to the sulfur content in the gas. GMs feeling was that since gas isnt supposed to have sulfur its not their fault. Apparently it caused some accidents from people getting freaked out and pulling over rapidly or something, and its not specific to the Vette, the article was actually about a Cav.
Since reading posts on CF I took their advice and started using only Chevron gas, since using Chevron I have never had the problem, EVERYTIME i have used anything but Chevron I get the empty gas message. So I guess we have to use Chevron..
