Re: Power steering Cooler - (SmoothFRC)
Well, I've managed to boil the PS fluid in an especially long and tight autocross in the middle of the Texas summer. If you decide to remove your PS cooler, let me know... I'll buy it... :yesnod:
You will need high pressure hose, if you drive your car when it is cold outside, you will see 400-600 psi pressure spikes. If you want a high peformance plate & fin type cooler that is much smaller let me know.
I was under the impression that the cooler was on the return side of the steering rack... - which would not really be under much pressure? is this incorrect?
Power steering cool is standard on the Z51 and Z06 equiped cars. yes it makes a difference when you run hard. But for occational track days I dont think it would matter. - ppl who run a lot of track days then YES it will help along with an Oil cooler and a tranny cooler.
PPl in ZO6's oil temps with out an oil cooler get up to 277 to 285 real fast. I have an oil cooler and accusump and a tranny cooler in my car. My oil temp has not risen abouve 235 when I run hard on the track.
Also need to define occational. For me occational is once a month at a Road course with about 4 to 5 hours per weekend of hard track time.
I have seen Z28 camero's and most Bimmers boil there powersteering fluid when they are run hard on track days when the car does not have a power steering cooler.
If you go to the track AT ALL, you need to keep that cooler in place, period. I have seen too many people boil their PS fluid and ruin all of the steering components (steering rack, pump ect.) It gets expensive to fix.

With the regular cooler in place on my '98 and '01, I cooked the pump in the '98 and the rack in the '01.
