Cobalt:
What's been said here regarding piston slap being the noise created by rocking of a piston at top dead center of the stroke is accurate. Also the comments re: coatings being used on the piston's skirts to tighten fit when the engine's cold is spot on.

The only missing point is that piston slap will typically diminish as the engine is heated up (like 15+ minutes) because the pistons will expand and lessen the slap. That difference distinguishes it from valve train noise which won't go away with heat.

As an aside, after market forged pistons may have a greater tendency to create slap. (This from one who has them)

More info. please. How common is the piston slap in the 2001 model year? Is the problem throughout the model year or early or late production? Anyone have information on how GM is handling the situation? How many on this board have had the problem or know owners who have?

Thanks.

There was a thread back on 12/10/2003 regarding piston slap called 'Piston Slap on LS1 Important.' No, its not just the '01. In fact most of the complaints were from owners with 2000-C5's. Good luck. :seeya

Not trying to hijack this thread, but should I be concerned about valve train noise, in addition to piston slap?? Is it a sign of something else about to give?
