Default Cam Question

Hey guys I am having a cam installed very soon and I am confused as usual. The choice is between a 220 220 550 114 LSA or 220 224 581 114 LSA.I want it to have a good idle and power in the mid to low range. If it helps my current mods are Vararam,Ported TB,SW headers,Hi-flow cats through GHL exhaust.....Thanks

Your stock valve springs should handle the 550 lift cam. so thats nice and easy. You should probably upgrade your valve springs if you go with the 581 lift. Both cams are pretty streetable, the 581 lift would give you some extra oomph in the higher end of the rpm range. If replacing the springs is not a problem go with the bigger one.

He's going to have to replace the springs regardless. Just because a spring can handle a certain lift, does not mean it can handle a certain ramp rate! An OEM spring would not do well at handling something as agressive as a comp extreme energy lobe, no matter what the lift.

Anyway, my vote is at the minimum a 224/224 duration on a 114lsa. It'll drive just fine, especially with tuning. I doubt most people would notice my car has a cam if they were to drive it, and its a 227/224 114lsa cam. Drivability starts to creep in as more of an issue above this range, especially with less lobe seperation angle, at least from my experiences.

The ramp rate is a major factor, agreed, I had heard from several users that the stock LS6 springs were actually rather good though, hence my thought on that. 224/224 581 114lsa with a set of Comp918 blue-stripe valve springs sounds about right, git-r-dun!
