I have a 98 and the only mod is the exhaust. I've been looking for a front intake mod to get the most out of the exhaust. Seems like everytime I get opinions, I get a different response. These are the results of my inquiries: Blackwing - 41%/K+N - 34%/Vararam - 19%/Other 6%. From a logical point of view, I would think the VaraRam makes the most sense, but I don't know. Would appreciate your opinions. Thanks. Jeff
The most logical setup to me (barring any smog restrictions) is one that directs cold air through the shortest path. For partial-ram effect, the Halltech TRAP is most direct. The Vararam requires air to travel a bit more, but both are similar in concept. Next comes the Vortex Rammer and the Granatelli intake (smog-legal in 50 states), both of which draw cold air from an opening in the radiator shroud.
The K&N FIPK (smog-legal in 50 states) takes some of the goodness of cold air and diffuses it a bit by drawing it through the sides of a flap that you create out of your radiator shroud. This flap deflects water away from the filter, so the filter area shouldn't get as dirty from water or excess dirty air.
The Blackwing draws in warmer air than the aforementioned systems, but is fairly inexpensive and simple to install. Thus, you should ask yourself: Is the extra HP and higher trap speeds from the cold air systems worth the small to large installation and maintenance hassles?
