Live in Phoenix, but it isn't that hot yet. Have a 98, Car has been running up to
233 degrees, will cool down to 217, when driving (normal :D )
A few days ago, it "blew" the throttle body coolant hose. Changed it, added coolant, still getting hot. Changed the thermostat (190) thinking maybe it's sticking, fans are coming on...still hot. Any ideals on the problem?? Also, scanned it, not showing any codes.
If you just added coolant, there may be air trapped in your cooling system. You may want to have it proffesionally bled if you're not sure where the bleed ports are.
Air dam is intack, aftermarket system, clamps up pretty easy.
Acts like it has air trapped, will drain the collant tank, then gush (boiling) back up.
Drove it home, had a full level, got home, tank was overfull, as it cooled down, started draining some fluid out again (into the system, not ground) it is now slightly below full.
As mentioned you probably have air in system . Those numbers arent really high 217 with ac on is normal on a 85+ degree day due to factory fan settings. See when those high fans kick in they may be off a little.
AC was off during all this. Car normally runs in the 190's, 210 in traffic maybe, but will cool down while moving.
Turned the AC on for about a mile (fans run on high) didn't change anything.
Hey Glenn, I actually have a 170 (Breathless Perf.) one, never installed it, keep waiting to get a program.
Now does that "really" cool the car. I would actually think, it would circulate sooner, and not let it sit in the radiator long enough to cool.
The 170 BPP thermo is junk. I had the BPP 172/178 thermo and my temp never went down, even with the divinci controller. Get a 160 from extreme and have Mike adjust your fans.
Scratch,
Make sure there is no trash buildup on the front of the radiator. You will need to get your C5 up on a lift to get the accumulation out.
The next time your out driving kick on your AC and see if that won't pull your ECT down. Your fans automatically come on with your AC but don't come on until 219deg low speed or 227deg high speed using temperature.
A good fix is to have the low and high fan temperature turn on points lowered using LS1Edit. Xtreme can do it for you along with a thermostat change.
A 160 therm will help and adj the fans so I agree with those suggestions but it does sound like you have air in the system---a be-cool radiator is about 500 bucks and has something like 25% more capacity I have been running the above setup for about 2 years and it even kept the blower motor from overheating despite the stupid ati shroud that covered 1/3 of the radiator and the 436 has not seen 190 yet and its pretty humid here already--on mid to upper 80 days I still have not seen 190 in traffic--I have not used the ac yet as I am still working on tuning and the idle is a bitch but will know more in a few days--I am told 178 to 180 is where max power on the ls1 is and the diff in 180 and 200 is 20rwhp loss so the 217 to 233 is really scary and the motor will shut down at 250 I've been there when I could not pull over in bad traffic--
Been There and done that !! :yesnod: I live in South Florida. The car would be in the 192-205 range on a cool day and as high as 226-228 on a hot day with the A/C on..Just brutal. :banghead:
Now...The car nevers goes over 180 degrees ....EVER! In fact most of the time it runs in the 167-174 range!! :smash:
This is what I did. Hypertech 160 T-Stat..Water Wetter(1 bottle to distilled water and a gallon of Dextron..just for starters. Then I installed a BE COOL radiator with oil cooler for the A4 ...and a Mezeire electric water pump.
It all works!!..You can do all or some..Good Luck:D
Thanks everyone...will start over, assuming it's air trapped.
Car has always ran cooler than what is currently happening here. Will eventually get it programmed.
So, what is the best way to try and get the air out of the system??? (I think i have air in mine also)
Most newer cars have a port in the thermostat to bleed off trapped air, (C5's have this) as for getting "any/all" trapped air out. Keep circulating fluids until it all has settled. This is my guess. Will re-post if it works for me.
check the hoses from the surge tank to the radiator, the nipple on the radiator were the hoses go in sometimes clogges with crap from that dam dexcoll clean it out with a pic.

Ok, dumb Q, then- how do you bleed out the fluid? Just open the valve and suck? :D

I didn't invent the system...however upon re-start this morning...air issues seem to be gone, where it sucks and dissapates the air, I don't know, may be gravity sending it back to the tank. But there is a port hole on the thermostat, and I was told that is what it does. ;)
I let idle to normal temps, fans kicked on, let it cycle through a couple of times, and bubbles and surging back into the resevoir haved stopped. Will let it cool down, drive it, see what happens. If something is stuck on the radiator, it doesn't "act" like that what's happening.
