Figuring 24K is time to refresh the rear diff fluid (easy 24k miles);
What fluid did you use?
Friction modifiers, etc?
Technique or steps (I realize you drain it and refill it);
Will hand pump work?
Any other points of interest?
Remember to remove the fill plug then the drain plug otherwise when it drains it will slosh all over the garage floor. The old oil is thick, greenish black and smells real bad.
It is a major PIA to clean up and will stain anything.
I second the use of the Redline Gear Oil. They make two versions one with the modifier and one without. Just make sure you get the right one. You will need two bottles but you will barely use any of the second one. Just keep it on hand for the next change.
I can barely hear a LITTLE SHORT grind or groan on a slow right turn...that made me think rear fluid.
I knew I could depend on you guys!
Gonbad....how's the big "D" still?
I finished grad school in December. I am trying to get out of here as fast as I can. Looking like back to Houston or New York City. If NYC then all the cars will go as I will live in Manhattan. That is the only drawback!
I just changed mine a couple of weeks ago. Go to http://www.vetteshop.cc and click on "misc". They have GM 75w90 synthetic lube (2 qts) and GM limited slip additive. Their prices are great, and their service was better. I ordered on Saturday, and it was on my doorstep on Wednesday. You'll need a 10mm allen head socket for the top and bottom plugs. When you're all done, torque the plugs at 26 ft lbs.
I use AMSOIL Series 2000 75w90 which has friction modifier in it. AMSOIL also makes a synthetic 75w90, which also has the friction modifier in it. Both are recommended and warrantied by AMSOIL for the C5/Z06.
AMSOIL does make a friction modifier (product code ADA), but my car doesn't seem to need it. My diff doesn't chatter with the Series 2000 75w90. FYI, AMSOIL rates this fluid as "fill for life" for normal service use.
I just changed mine out this weekend. Changeout is very simple once you get the right stuff. I use a $3 oil pump I bought at the local autostore to pump the fluid up into the diff (and I have another one for the tranny fluid).
I used AMSOIL and had some minor posi chatter, so I had to add about an ounce of SLIP-LOCK. Luckily I bought a bottle when I bought all my AMSOIL fluids. I had access to a buddies lift and fluid transfer hand pump. With that set up it took less than 30 minutes to change the tranny and diff fluids. The only difference I noticed was a slight reduction in tranny gear rattle on shut down and I think it feel smoother during shifting but that could have been the plecibo affect of doing a job like this.
i used Amsoil, i waited to see if I had any chatter. It did and then I
added the GM additive. I used a pump that mounted right onto the
quart bottles-a small plastic thing that has a plunger.
Remember to remove the fill plug FIRST, then the drain plug otherwise when it drains it will slosh all over the garage floor. The old oil is thick, greenish black and smells real bad.
