Default Electronic Torque Wrenches - required?

These expensive ($400+) electronic torque wrenches are required for head R&R on LS1s. Anyone know of a way around buying these tools other than paying someone else to do the engine work?

Eh? I thought all you needed was a torque/angle meter...

Even easier. You get a regular torque wrench, and then after you torque the bolts, you marke the heads with a marker and turn them the appropriate number of degrees. That way you can track how far you turn them...

The Lisle unit for about 25 bucks works fine.

Use a standard torque wrench. AutoZone sells an angle meter for about $12.

You dont need to get fancy. Torque is torque. If you have a quality torque wrench, you should be fine! The military requires that a torque wrench be tested prior to use. It's a good idea to clamp the torque wrench drive in a vise and cycle it past the torque that you intend to use. I have a click torque wrench and I always test it prior to use! Good practice that can let you know if the wrench is working.
