Does adding header wrap to long tube headers provide any benefits or is it a waste of money? Has anyone done this?
I did it on my old firebird, It didn't notice any improvement other than you could touch the heards without burning your hand off. I did however cause problems with the getting the headers back on because the wrap got in the way of the header bolts near the tubes.
If I were to do anything again, I would just get the slip on ones, but I doubt I would even do those.
I have done it on a few cars, more to protect electronics than for performance and it does that well. I just tried it on my Borla exhaust to keep heat out of the cabin and to hopefully lower some resonance. Works great on the heat but not at all on the resonance. I think I still prefer the high temp coatings though.
I think the increased heat over time will cause the metal to be brittle regardless if it's mild steel or stainless. i guess stainless will endure much better than mild. I believe LG can confirm it for ya.
i don't think header manufacturer warranty their headers if wrapped either.
I agree that header wrap is bad for headers, most manufacturers will deny warrenty claims if header wrap is used.
The scariest reason not to is that the wrap will act as a wick and can cause oil leaks to become a huge fire hazard. So if oil leaks on your wrapped headers, the car could burn up.
