With settings you gave me car ran over 200 degrees on the freeway . Thats to hot, with a 160 degree stat and correct fan settings I should be able to run 190 degrees. I want to here what others have there fans are set at.
If you are running 200 on the freeway, something is wrong with the stat or your cooling system. You may still have air in the system. It should run about 172- 175 on the freeway before you even mess with the fans. As for the fan settings, this is where i set mine:
High speed ON 195 off 185
Low speed ON 185 off 175
My car never gets over 200 in traffic with the AC on. On the highway it stays at 172 all day long. Hope this helps. SCOTT
99 hard way is right, my fans are set the same. Somewhat lower coolant temps won't hurt the car, just help it make horsepower.
THE MOST POWER IS MADE AT 200 DEGREES AND THE CLEARANCES ARE TOO LOOSE WHEN THE MOTOR IS COLD.
Ask any reputable engine builder , not a vendor selling t-stats
No rat you got it all wrong. In the last 4 years I've dyno'd and tuned MANY LS1's and LS6's, hundreds of dyno runs, and ALL of the motors have made more power at 170 to 180 coolant temp. You see a drop of at least 15 HP AT 200 or higher. As for clearances, once you get the motor up to operating temp, the only clearance that changes appreciably between 170 and 200 is the piston to cylinder, IF YOU ARE RUNNING FORGED PISTONS. And guess what, stock pistons are not forged, they are hypereutetic. That's what GM picked BECAUSE they don't change size (and for their strength compared to normal cast). As for the reputable builders, YOU ask them. I have.
You sound just like the guywho used to post here whining about how running lower temps would cause "cylinder wsh", are you back?
Thanks for the info, I will reprogram my on / off values later to day. Coming into work today, its 68 degrees outside and I am running 201 - 205. Thats uncool.
Thanks,
Tony

wtf ?
anyway...........190 to 200 in a car works fine in the real world.cold motors do not make better power, only a cold intake charge does.
the ls1's are clearanced to run at 190 to 210, colder temps just let the piston rock , rattle and roll.
like it or not.
after building literally hundreds of motors , I stand by my statement.
just thought I'd add.......I've only seen washed cylinder walls in alcohol motors.
Rat: It's cool. I agree with you that cylinder wash, halitosis, etc. is not caused by running a 160 stat, and that the LS1 runs just fine at 190 to 210. However, from all the ones we have tuned or built we have seen that you can get a little more power by running them a little cooler. Running a cold air intake helps more, but you can add to that gain by running the motor at a coolant temp of around 180. This helps keep the cylinder heads from having hot spots whick cause preignition. By doing this you can run more ignition advance without getting into KR. Eg. I am running a mild cam, decked 5.3 truck heads with a compression ratio of 11.4:1 and still can run 31 degrees of advance on 91 octane gas without any KR. Chevy runs 24 degrees of advance on their LS6 with only 10.6:1 CR and still gets KR partly because of the hot coolant temps from the factory.
I have been running this combo for 3 1/2 years, with a 160 stat, summer and winter. It has great power from a tiny cam, better than stock gas mileage, passes smog like a stocker, and I have seen no issues attributable to non-stock clearances, such as low or high oil pressures, or piston slap.
First of all have you tested the 160 stat?? pot of water.. meat thermometer, slowly bring to a boil.. there have been a slew of improperly boxed stats.. when I first put my 160 in, I had to go through two that where boxed as 160's but in fact where 190's... after testing three I finally got one that was correct...
