Default Wiper Problem

Is Anyone Having The Same Problem
I Have A 97 Coupe, Where The Wipers Run For No Reason
Started Out Running Intermittingly, Then At Low Speed And Run That Way Always Except When I Turn To High Speed.
Have Been To Dealer But Have No Confidence.
First He Said Battery Was Leaking And Corroded Cable.
Cleaned Up And Replaced Battery. Worked For 2 Or 3 Days And Started All Over Again. Now They Say I Need A Wiper Motor Module $195 Installed. Sounds Like A Switch To Me I Always Use The Tilt Wheel To Get In & Out Of Car.

I've had the same problem on my 99 FRC. There is a GM bulletin on this subject. The problem is that the drain on both sides of the cowl is blocked. So after a rain storm the cowl area is full of water and submerges the wiper motor/module. This causes intermitten wiper operation on it's own. Remove the cowl and there are 3 drain tubes on drivers side (made of rubber and has a slit on the bottom) and I think 1 on the passengers side. Remove these tubes and cut the bottom off so it can drain easily. The pass side is little more difficult. Remove the back 1/2 of the pass side fender well (this will expose the drain pipe) and find a long plastic tube. I think it has the rubber thing on the end also. Cut the bottom like the drivers side. Hose everything off with running water to clean everything and reassemble. Oh, forgot something. While you have everything apart, disassemble the wiper module and dry it out (compressed air works well). This procedure will fix it but there is a chance the wiper module will go bad (mine did not). I do have a brand new GM wiper motor/module spare I'll sell to you if you need one (1/2 what they are asking for). If you run into problems e-mail me you phone # and I can help you.

I used to work for a GM dealer a while back and have ties to GM techs. A friend who is a service manager mentioned the bulletin but never got my hands on it.

Check the windshield Cowl drains! They are clogged and your wiper module and motor are sitting in stagnet nasty water!!

I would also make sure that the drivers carpet is not wet because the water can leak in through the wiper wiring harness fire wall plug!

Been there!
