From a performance/price standpoint how would a pair of modified (milled, ported etc.) LS1 heads compair to some of the other options available;
ZO6 heads, AFR, etc.
On a "street" engine set-up (read; mild cam, 222-224, closed exhaust)
Bottom line; what's the best bang for the buck if you spend 95% of the time on the street, and want a powerful, yet doctile street machine?
Well, I paid about $2500 for my "stage II" heads. I could have purchased new Z06 heads, ported and polised for $2k. Anyways, the heads that I have work great with the 224 cam and SLP headers, x-pipe and Loudmouths. I drive my car mostly on the street.
I make 393rwhp and 395 rwt in my a4 with a 224/ 560 cam with stock cats. Give Richard a call @ West Coast Cylinder Heads. Best kept secret out there. Car runs 11.69 @117 on the motor all day long.
Sounds like you want the same thing I did when I went heads/cam. You don't need to use high dollar LS6 head cores, mine are off a 5.3 liter truck, ported, decked for 11.4:1 CR, and with 2.0" and 1.58" valves. With a milder cam than your suggesting mine makes 413rwhp, and 390 rwtq. GREAT street motor, passes smog and better than stock gas mileage.
Thanks for the info; it seems like some good hp #s can be made fairly cheap.
When looking for some used "ported" heads, what "casting #s" would work best?
862s
317s
or just look for 5.3, or 6.0s??
I want to keep comp ratio around 10.5 because I run 150hp nitrous (with a timing retard)
Thanks again
