Default Need help - Bilstein Shock Install

Hi everyone!

I bought some used Bilstein Sport Shocks about 6 months ago from a forum member, but haven't had the chance (or motivation) to install them until now. I took out the rear shocks so far, but looking at the new shocks, the nut on the top of the shock doesn't look fully secured down.

In the following diagram you can see the top of the shock and the NUT at the top of it looks like it's fully screwed down to secure the bracket that is used for bolting the top of the strut to the a-arm.

So I was wondering if I should go ahead and secure it down, or does it serve a purpose to be un-secured, and nearer to the top of the shock bolt? Why would the person who sold it to me even un-secure it in the first place? You can take the shock completely off the car without even touching that top bolt. It's been so long that I don't even remember who i bought it from.

Any help or input would be much appreciated. -- TIA!

It has been a long time since I installed my shocks but if I remember correctly you remove that bolt and have a couple grommets. You put that plate between the grommets and then tighten it down.

You'll also reuse the stock rubber bushings on the front as they are "cone" shaped--the ones on the bilsteins will not work. At least not on an 02
