Actually, I have seen them..the tail end of the last batch of gears (390/410)..Installed from different well known shops. You can usually see the material movement on the face of the gear set.
The typical MO of this is the gears are dead quiet at first, and then around 750-1000 miles they start to scream. Based on what I have seen it looks like a heat treat issue. A lot of them have recently been replaced finally as for some reason there were not any gears available for an extended period of time. I know of 3 now that have been replaced with the exact same setup specs as the defective and have been fine.

Default How do you know if your A4 is slipping?

Well I have a bit more HP now and I am wondering what signs to look for when the tranny is starting to give. The only answer I have gotten is "You will know". I assume there are variations in how it begins to deteriorate/fall apart. Worst case scenario it won't upshift or downshiftom 3-4 or some other gear, but how about just slipping some where I am losing power. Is there any way to detect this w/o a huge $$$?

I am going to the track this Sunday and a bit of anxiety hoping my latest mods/power are truly realized.

With the weather, trapping 116-118mph is what I am hoping for (mods link below in sig)

I had a bad set of Motive 3.90's about a year ago - started howling after about 400 miles of easy driving.

Replaced them with another set of 3.90's that have been whisper quiet for 15K now. If I recall correctly, they were bought from Corvettes of Houston, and Paul warrantied them for me, and I suppose sent them back to Motive. (Motive themselves being fairly unhelpful through the whole deal)

I had a bad set of 4.10's. They were dead quiet at first, but at about 800 miles they started to whine and just got worse. DTE did the rear end, and warranty'd them fully- labor & shipping included. I highly recommend them for gearsets. Phil acknowledged the problem & took car of everything- a class organization. He said there seemed to be a bad batch of gears from motive. Scott

I had a bad set of 4.10s too...brand new yet they were warped on some spot

I then ordered from gearsareus.com and they double charged me and wouldn't give me my money back until 3 days later

His differential was built nearly a year ago now.

In an effort to head-off any possible issues with MG ring and pinion sets now, or in the future, we have recently purchased an RC Hardness Comparator that enables us to now closely monitor gear set and output shaft hardness before they are installed into our differentials. Until this time of this equipment purchase, we relyed on the product from MG to be inspected on their end, but just like anything else in mass production, every individual piece is not inspected piece-for-piece, as this procress would consume far too much time in manufacturing to be finacially viable. MG produces a very fine product, but we take this extra step on our end to verify the RC hardness that is expected with these products as a tighter level of QC~ for if they have a problem, we have a problem...

We have also been cryogenically treating ALL of our gear sets for the past three months as a pre-caution, regardless of the differential's stage of build and the additional cost of these QC efforts has been absorbed internally for our two most common versions of differentials.

Just some cheap FYI folks..

Best Regards,
DTE

Phil--that is great news. You do go the extra mile. I am hoping to get my 3.90s back to you for you to inspect soon.

Anyone have any experience with Motive Gear 4.10's from New Era Performance? I bought a set and am having Speed Inc install them. The gears are not setting up right and Speed Inc has done A LOT of these so I trust that they are not doing the install wrong. New Era and Motive Gear are each telling me that the other party is responsible. Niether party would ship another set of gears. To avoid waiting until next week and taking up a bay at Speed Inc with my disassembled 04 Corvette I simply bought another set and am returning the set I bought to New Era. I must say I am disappointed with the customer service at both New Era and Motive Gear.
