Default Average tranny fluid temps?

Hi folks

What do you normally see as your average tranny fluid temp, just cruising around town, and on the highway?

I ask because I looked it up and I see posts from folks reporting temps in the 220-240 range while racing, but there's not much chat about what they are during normal driving.

Mine seem to hover around 195 for around town driving, and 205 on the highway. This is in 90+ deg outside temps.

Is this normal?

Thanks!

I usually run in the 170 range on highway. In the city, I usually drive in 3rd gear (I have an A4) and the temp gets as high as 210.

These data points are with 80+ ambient temp.

Ok, so I guess mine ain't far off. I guess in the back of my mind I'm trying to determine if there is ANYTHING amiss with my tranny before I get this motor work done. I dunno why I worry about it, cuz I'm just gonna wait till the tranny goes (if ever) anyway before I pay someone to bust it open and upgrade parts.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Good to know I'm at least close to normal.

Climbing a mountain in Arizona, it will run up to 235F, but regular cruising is around 195-210F.

Your temps sound normal to me. If/when you change fluid, go with Amsoil or Mobil 1 synthetic, as they withstand heat much better than dino juice.

When I added my 2800 stall TC my trans temps went up to 223 and above. It should be between 175 and 225 but I want to be on the low side of that number to help the trans last against the extra power I am making. With my trans cooler installed and a Doug Dewitts direct fit radiator my maximum trans temp is 193. That’s when driving around the city with temps outside in the high 90's and humidity levels that make it feel like 105 according to the weather girl.

The stock radiator does not have allot of extra capacity in it. I am shocked that it works as well as it does considering how thin it is. Adding the Dewitts radiator and a Perma Cool trans cooler has me feeling much better about my Vette's ability to control temps.

By the way my engine temps are running between 178 and 200.

So, is it required then that I have to upgrade my radiator before I can use a trans cooler? I was planning on just adding a trans cooler and was thinking the OEM radiator could handle it. Is that not the case?

thx

IMO... It depends on what you have done or plan to do to the car. For example, changing the valve timing with a new cam will increase the amount of heat your engine generates, so will increasing the compression ratio. A Supercharger or a turbocharger will do that too. Almost anything you do to increase power is going to bring with it a corresponding increase in the generation of heat. As you make mods each one builds more heat and the cumulative effect will eventually overwhelm the stock radiators capacity. Perhaps not today but if you make enough changes it happens.

For an automatic a higher stall converter creates more heat due to the increased slip within the unit, friction makes heat. All of that heat is also dumped into the radiator. For that reason I believe that those of us with automatics hit the capacity of the radiator before the M6 crowd does.

But yes you can add a cooler to your existing cooling system.

Just watch the temps on your engine and trans as you make each change, you will know when it's time to get a bigger radiator.

My high (after playing around) was 235 with 3.73 & SS3600 converter.
No tranny cooler (yet)

All good points. I'm working with Lou G right now to figure out if I'll need another radiator or not. Seeing as how I don't do a heck of a lot of formal racing and am just looking for a *****-out fun street car, it may not be much of an issue. (She won't be pushed too hard too often...at least maybe not ). At the very least it is always something I can do later. Or looked at another way, the cost to upgrade the radiator is relatively small compared to the other mods I have planned.

Thanks!
