I used Redline D4 ATF for the first 18 months or so of my car's life, then switched to AMSOIL ATF last January. Both of these oils meet Dexron III requirements. My tranny now has something like 16k total miles, 7 DE days, and 24 SCCA races without a problem.
Overheating a tranny is very common on a road course if you drive hard. I did it on my very first DE at Roebling Road with Redline D4 ATF in the tranny. As soon as I got the warning on the DIC, I pulled in and let it cool.
When I had my car prepped for SCCA T1, I had a GM tranny cooler kit put in by Phoenix Performance. No problems with tranny overtemps in two race seasons in the 100 degree MidWest summers I race in. However, note that a tranny cooler is again probably outside the warranty.
As mentioned above, the tranny takes about 3.75 quarts. The drain plug is on the lower passenger side rear of the tranny and the fill plug is about mid-way forward on the driver's side and near the top. To get the oil up into the fill plug I use an oil bottle pump. AMSOIL now makes a nice one that screws right onto their bottles. It is under the "Bottle Hand Pump" under the transmission fluid link on the online store.
