Default Help with new (wierd) noises* =(

I've got two new noises commnig from my drive-train. One has been kind of on-going and the other is far more pronounced since my trip to the drags this past weekend.

1. I have a sort of clunk from the rightish rear end.

- It seems to happen right in the morning when I'm driving down my street. Also, it happens when I shift the weight of the care sometimes... i.e. when I apply the brakes. The problem is that it's so intermitent that it's hard to diagnose.

Is "the clunk" a common problem that people have like column lock etc?

2. Since my escapades at the drags last weekend (on street tires) there's an increase in what sounds like a gear whine from the rear end.

- I fully understand how noisy the drive-trains of these cars are esp. with the lack of sound deadening insulation, but the change in noise is what bugs me.

The noise only happens when the car is under slight load, heavy load the exhaust is too loud, and when I let off the gas the noise stops. It gets louder the faster I seem to go.

** I can't fully tell if it's the rear or the clutch b/c the noise just comes from the "drivetrain" in general. The car is under warranty so I may just beat on it until the noise gets bad then take her in.

Any ideas would be great

I can't help you with the gear whine but my 2000 had the EXACT same intermittent clunck from the right rear. It turned out to be the anti-sway bar mounts, the bottom clamp nut should be torqued to 70lb ft. The upper clamp nut should be torqued to 49 lb ft. Do this to both sides and I think your clunk will disappear!

Thanks... I'll check that torque.

If you have lots of miles on the car, check the fluids and fluid levels and maybe upgrade to better quality fluids! Sometimes that helps!
