I'm looking to switch to a more agressive cam shaft and to go with dual valve spring.
what budget should I expect?
how many HP can I gain?
how difficult it is to change the cam shaft?
how long does it takes.
so far my car has only a vararam and LGM LT pro headers.
thank you
cam installs can be easy and they can be alittle more difficult, its not really a hard task, its having to take alot of things apart to get to it, i did a cam swap on my 00 ws6, it wasnt really hard at all, and after everything was bolted back up the car started right up and ran, im going to do a cam install on my c5 here shortly It looks alot easier, the valvesprings especially. You can expect a few days on the cam install if you are a average ability joe. it could be done in 8-10 hours if youve done a hunderd of em i supose. cams for our cars new run about 400 bucks, but if your lucky you can find a used one online for roughly 200 bucks, valvesprings run about 100-150 for a decent pair, I just purchaced a lunati sleeper cam, 220/220 .581/.581 , i went with that because i have an A4, if you have a m6 you might want a good 224/224 or more, its all in how far you want to go with your mods in the future, if your going to eventually get heads done etc, go with a good cam to run behind em, if you wana stick to a stock like car get a sleeper like that one, theres some good stealth cams out there too.
I got 52 more RWHP doing a cam, LT headers and high flow cats and an underdrive pulley. If I was to break it down, I would guess the underdrive to be about 5hp, the cam 20-25 and the headers and cats 25-30. This is just a guess and the mods were just done yesterday. Damn I wanted more........
If you are interested in having us do the work for you give me a call. If you plan on doing the instal yourself we can custom grind a cam for you for $325.00. I would recommend upgrading your springs. If you want a underdrive pulley I can throw that into the mix as well. Our shop number is 303 438 1571. Kaley

I may show a saturday morning to see how much it will cost.
and definitely how many ponies I can expect.

I'm not sure I will do it for 20-25 HP!!!
thanks to all of you
it all depends on what cam you choose. there are a lot of people that get into the 400+ rwhp range with (a 100 hp gain) with a cam/exhaust/intake and headers.

400 rwhp and 425 rwtq with out cam here. darn great dyno tune plus better air flow into and out of the engine. ( intake, tb, headers, x-pipe, exhaust, electronic engine managment )
a great dyno tune alone can get a stock ZO6 - LS6 motor up to 375-385 rwhp like the SCCA T1 vettes get.

Check around though, I think my numbers are low. I have mixed reviews on that, some tell me it's low, others say about right. I was looking to do about 400RWHP with my mods but got only 55 more RWHP (I'm at 375.5RWHP) and 30 torque?????, to me, something is wrong......

Well, most of the cams mentioned retained nearly stock drivability and idle, and are considered mild. Check out LG's G5X3, TSP's 233/239, or Thunder Racing's TRex. Those are some wild cams, and will get you over 400RWHP with headers, more with heads.

I visited dragon race engineering and they told me that with ported throttle, LGM headers, Vararam, mass air flow and a good new cam we should be able to gain much more that 100HP!!!!
If you've got a varraram and headers then a new cam is just what you need. It's a bit tedious and frustrating if you do it by yourself and without much experience like I did, but it is definately do-able. I used the following instructions and they got me through with flying colors:
You can also check out the site in my sig for some good pictures of the process. Check out the "C5 h/c swap tear down" and "C5 h/c swap button-up" pages. I also have a page with what pictures of what parts I used and what the price was and where they came from.
Regardless of whether you do it yourself or not, you are going to want to take it to a pro for a thorough dyno-tune when you are done. If you haven't had it reprogrammed since adding the varraram and headers, you probably already have some hp there that hasn't been unlocked yet.

I am going to have dragon engineering do a full cam, headers, heads, and tune on the second week of january. After it is done I can report back to you about my final results.

Hope some of that helps, good luck!
