I have a Blackwing now, is it worth it to switch to the Vararam. Is there any HP to be gained from one to the other. I know the Vararam claims a 40 HP gain, but I find that a little hard to swallow.
As soon as I figure out if I received a VR-1B or VR-2B and install it I will let you know if it was worth while!
Bill Curlee,
You got the VR-B2. The instructions haven't been updated to reflect the change in design generation.
OOBlackconvert,
You will notice a definite SOTP improvement going from the Blackwing to the Vararam. There are a few forum members that have gone from the Blackwing to the Vararam and have posted favorable responses.
I did that change. You will be happy going from hot to cold air intake. Best I can describe it is that your car will pull when it's warm like it's cold outside. My car was always doggy on hot days with the blackwing. Not now.

Shawn,
Will be installing your VaraRam B2 and a set of LG long tube headers with cats.
1. anyone have install instructions for the LG headers?
2. Will I need to do any tuning afterwards?
3. If so, does anyone know generally what parameters will need to be adjusted with HP Tuner?
Appreciate any help from the forum folks. Thanks.
John
The 40 hp claim is just plain stupid. It will be worth it, but don't expect a real SOTP difference. If you go to the drags than you will see the difference there.....Tony

I agree that it is highly unlikely that you will
a) achieve a 40HP gain
b) feel the difference as SOP
A good alternative to spending a big chunk of money if you already have a Blackwing or Halltech Stinger is to spend a couple of hours to do my cold air mod. You will gain up to about 10 HP compared to when the engine bay temps (and your intake air) gets up over 100 degrees F without the mod. A brief description and a fully-detailed dowmloadable PDF is available on my website at:
Though I do not have any experience with either product, heck I don't even have my C5 yet , I am thinking that the Vararam will perform better in higher gears, and at higher speeds. There's a sort of ram-air effect created which pretty much forces the air into the engine. It's one of those mods that doesn't show too much improvement on the dyno because the vehicle is stationary, but in real driving conditions, its impact is greater. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
There's a big difference between ramming air into the TB/intake and ramming air into a filter. Certainly, there is some "assisted push" through the filter, but not nearly enough to create a "true-ram air" condition. In summation, your HP will benefit from cold air, but not 40HP's worth.
If you already spent the cash on the Blackwing, do Dave68's fresh air mod and leave it at that. Fresh cold outside air is where the power is not the ram effect. If you do his mod you get some ram effect from the radiator pickup area anyway.
