I recently purchased a Hurst shifter and plan on installing it in a day or so...
I have a few questions with regards to the springs installed in the shifter. The instructions mentioned that from the Hurst factory the springs installed are different spring rates (tensions).
Is there any need to adjust the tension (screws) for the springs already installed in the shifter from Hurst?
Also, if i don't adjust the screws for tension, do I need to add thread lock to those screws?
Also, what springs are recommended for the most reasonable shifter efforts (crosscar gate effort)? The springs installed from the Hurst factory?
I used the "medium" springs, which I believe are the ones that are factory installed. I installed mine about 2.5 years ago, and my middle-aged memory isn't quite as good as it used to be, but I seem to recall that I also tightened the retaining screws for the springs about 2-3 turns.
Yes, definitely use some blue loctite on those screws, as well as the shifter stop screws, and you'll be all set. Good luck with the install!
Yes remove the screws and re-install using Loctite. Take note of how many threads are showing before removing the screws so you can re-install at the same level. The screws adjust the spring tension which effects the shifter action.

I don't think the factory springs were installed with different spring tensions from side-to-side, but you can easily do this yourself. I did this on mine. I have the slightly stronger spring for the 2-3 shift side and use less tension for the 3-2,5-4 downshift side. Playing with the screw tension helps here too. Just have to experiment a bit. HTH
3 1/2 turns in is the center of adjustment. Hurst says no more then one turn in or out from that position. I went one turn in with stiffest inner spring on the left side and my car wouldn't go into reverse. I had to back out the left screw to the center 3 1/2 position to get reverse. My screws were not loctited from Hurst.
Nope, just leave springs as is. remove the positve stops though. you dont need them
At first the shifter seem stoo stiff. let it break in after about 2 weeks of straight driving. then it gets easier. the springs will wear down over a a month or two and then its a beauty. it helps a whole lot when powershifting 2nd to 3rd. youll never miss the gate.
Keep the stops and adjust as per instructions or you may mess up your trany. If you plan on shifting like my grand mother then take stops out, but if you shift like I do, 5500/6500 speed shifts, better have stops in place. I used the light outer spring and the heavy inner spring, good for 1 through 4 but 5th can take some effort and have to concentrate on 6th. It works great for me.
