I was looking in the Midwest catalogue and saw inline feul filters for all C5's including the 04. I was going to order one but was told by someone that the filter in the 04 filter is actually in the feul tank.....is this correct? And it will only cost $1000 to change it.
Thats correct. The fuel filter is located in the gas tank. I don't plan to service it for quite awhile as long as I continue to use quality gas from reputable dealers.

Thats unbelievable...I'm glad they didn't put the oil filter in the middle of the engine block
The 04 filter is in the same location as the 97-98 vettes, on the frame up near the drivers side wheel well as said by Rattler71. I know this because I have some 04 filters left over, so if you need one let me know. The differnce between the 97-98 and the 99-04 is that the 99-04 filters have the regulator built into the filter and that makes them more $ then the 97- 98 . Hope that helps you
AMSOIL sells the fuel filter element (among other things). I've changed out mine on my 02 Z06 and it is a piece of cake if you have the fuel line separator tool (which can be bought at any auto parts store for a couple of bucks).
AMSOIL part numbers:
2004 CHEVROLET CORVETTE 5.7L 8-cyl VIN Code G

Oil Vapor Filter......N/R

According to a write-up by Hib Halverson, the fuel filter was moved from the frame to the inside of the tank in the mid-2003 production year. It remains there today in the C6.

The fuel filter on the new 2003-04 FFS system is an integral part of the left fuel sender and it is not servicable short of replacing the fuel sender, which requires removing the trans and rear differential to remove the fuel tank (unless you know the tricks of course )
Well boys one half of you say its on the frame well the other half say its inside the tank and not servicable.
My local dealer says its accessable and has one on hold for me that I am supposed to pick up tomarrow!!!!
As per the 2003-04 service manual:
"The fuel filter is contained in the fuel sender assembly inside the left fuel tank. The paper filter element of the fuel filter traps particles in the fuel that may damage the fuel injection system. The fuel filter housing is made to withstand maximum fuel system pressure, exposure to fuel additives, and changes in temperature. There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement."
