Whether you're referring to coolant or oil temps, if that's as high as you could get it that's too cold. You want oil temps to be 180-220, coolant should be around the same. Much colder than 180 and you'll start getting accelerated engine wear.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Default cold

as far as the throttle by pass,i bought one for my 01 and noticed on the package when i got it that it IS NOT reccomended for cars in cold climates,i.e.upstate n.y. and such!so i didn't put it in.and it is not neccessary, either.i'd remove it!incidentally, ocean county qualifies for too cold!i'll be down that way on thanks giving,in lavallette.thinking of taking the vette for a road trip.you shouldn't even be running the vette at less than 180 or so if you get on it.

In fact, I believe Evil Twin swaps his 160 out for the Winter for that very reason, and he lives in Penn.

You are correct sir...I run the 160F stat from april until october. and the stocker 195F the rest of the time.. with proper fan setting for each stat.
takes five minutes to do the swap. Lots of damage can occur with an LS1 ( tight clearances) running it at 150 all day.. lack of lubricity, engine not swollen to proper clearances. Carbon build up. increased compression ratio. you want to try to keep the coolant around 190 summer and winter.. oil temps 200/210 summer and winter.

Default Fan settings

Nothing wrong with changing out your thermostat, but I would start by just changing your fan settings and see if that solves your problem, if not then change the thermostat. Might save you a little work and it will not hurt anything. 150 is too cold, shoot for 180 and things should be fine. Good luck. By the way I would fix this asap because at 150 I would say you are doing your engine no good.

Default Too cold temps...

FWIW, I live in Michigan and have put 30,000+ miles on my '00 vert, and I changed to a 160 very early on. Even the coldest temps I have encountered here (No winter use, of course!), say 25 degrees or so, and I never see under 167 degrees. I once saw 163 in N.C. while coasting down a 7% mountain grade for about 4 miles or so. Could be your 'stat is a little under 160 or your sender is slightly off, or both. If I had it to do over again, I think I'd go with a 180, mainly to keep my oil temps up just a little more, as I have to run at 80 MPH or so in 85 degree temps to get over 190 degree oil temps. I have seen no wear increases or signs thereof. I think that you are O.K. at around 170 on the coolant. I would be more concerned with how cool your oil temps are.The biggest problem with running too cold an oil temp is acids that form in the oil (normal occurances) can't be neutralized or "burned off" at this low a temp. Bad for the metal surfaces, like bearings, rings, sleeves, etc. As far as oil temps go, I think that 220 is too hot. Not that far back in automotive history, a good rule of thumb was that for every 10 degree increase in oil temp over 200 degrees, your oils useful life is cut in half.Granted, Mobil 1 and other synthetics can deal with this much better than older petroleum based oils could, however, oil this hot can, and is, harder on seal life, and all things being equal, offers less viscosity and therefore protection, than the same oil at 180-200 degrees. Just my .02
