I have heard that the 4L60E is a bit on the weak side.
Is this true and if so what would be best to make it survive better?
I have looked here and found all kinds of stuff but not real sure what to get and how involved some of this is.
I may run a little juice later on but the whole "may blow up your A4" worries me.
The 4L60E is notorious for failing. Usually the 3-4 clutchpack.
A number of things can kill it in short order. "Excessive" temperature, "excessive" horsepower and torque, manual shifting, or even if its the slightest bit low on fluid.
Of course "excessive" is a relative term.
Keep it cool, keep yourRW HP/TQ below 400 as 375-400RWHP is where they seem to eventually crap out. don't manually shift, expecially don't downshift it, make sure it's topped off and fluid is running out of the hole if you should ever refill it.

its funny that you post this. i just received my spare 4l60e and rear from ebaymotor auction. anyway i say this cause ill ordered ptk twin turbos and will be pushing some serouis hp 650 700. i currently have trans built by local guy JG transmission@ 215 659 3022. its been flawless and has transgo kit 4l65e plates and other trick w/tci 3800 stall. i spoke to kevin winstead at tci and new turbos we will build new tranny with tci rebuild kit, high strengh input, 5 planetary front and rear gear, heavy duty 3,4 servo kolen metal plates and red line plate and bunch of other stuff. call Kevin Winstead @TCI
Hehe not looking for 600-700 hp. (yet)
the car just has 2500 miles on it and all I would like to do is run maybe a 150 shot of juice on her without being to concerned about toasting the tranny.
would just the shift kit help?
Trans cooler?
larger servo?
Boost valve?
Or will I have to go into the trans to make it safer?
if your going to pull the tranny you might as well blow it up first!
serouisly beat on it and if it breaks , oh well then pull it. pulling and building the tranny is the same weather its blown or not.

All custom with a 9in rear gear
91 has the trans up front
If you Get a bullet proof trans the next weak link will show its ugly head.
