Default High Stall question - what to expect?

What is a high stall torque converter like as a daily driver - like in traffic and at partial throttle and at low speed cruise? Is it slipping all the time at 1200-1800 RPM? And how about on the twisties - is it locking up or do you have to hold it in 2nd gear?

Thinking of dropping in a stall at around 2600-2800 and I am curious about daily driveability.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, EG

I have a SY3500/3.42 combo and while it's a little loose, not bad at all in my opinion. When you're taking off normally, it's like smoothly letting out the clutch on a stick car, but when you get on it, there is NO hesitation or slipping. This converter is just SICK up to about 30-35 mph roll, because of it's efficiency.
I went with the 3.42 because I spend time on the highway and didn't want the car to rev that high. The 3.73's will help tighten up the converter, so it drives closer to stock (which it sounds like what you want).
Under normal driving, it does take a little more pedal, but that's expected of a "looser" converter, but once again, it's not a bad trade off for the performance that it gives back. The whole thing with converters is that there will be trade offs over stock, and you just have to figure out what you're willing to live with. Higher STR (stall torque rating) will tighten the converter, but shock the tires when flashing the converter, or lower STR (like mine) will be easier on the tires (good for street tires, street driving), but feels looser. Once again, it's finding out what you can live with. I recommend finding someone in your area with a converter and going for a ride with them.

I have NO problem with spirited driving with this converter, but if you got something like mine, a 3.73 would help out with that.

I think that if you go with a PI (Vigilante) 2800 and a 3.73, it'll have the driveability of stock with all of the performance of a stall converter and would be a Great DD set-up for you. Good Luck!

You should be fine with a 2600-2800 stall. Very little difference from stock in normal traffic .

I have a 3200 Vigilante stall with 315's. At first you are slightly aware of slippage then you don't even notice it in day to day driving. One place you may be more aware is when starting to move in reverse ---- but it's really a non-issue.

On the positive side I'm getting 1.62 60' at the strip!

You'll use more throttle at lower RPM. For example, I typically see about 1/4 throttle pulling away from stops, usually around 22-2500 until lockup (3.73+SY3500). Throttle response becomes less precise. I notice it most in low speed maneuvering like parking and backing up. You'll also notice an increase in exhaust volume corresponding to the increase in throttle position. Your mileage will drop a little unless the majority of your driving is while locked up (i.e. highway.) As mentioned, it's less noticeable with lower stall speed. If you're changing gear ratio too, you might consider a little more.
