Default resonance

when you talk about borla stingers the term resonance always comes up
well after asking several people in different posts what exactly do they call resonance and getting no response now im asking the whole forum what is his or her definition of resonance

i have the borla stingers 2 tip system and have no resonance yet everyone i tell that says no way
ive even had some yoyo (not mentioning names) go as far as telling me i dont have borla stingers

so again i ask what is your definition of resonance

If you don't have it why worry about it?

Any cavity, including the interior of a car, can give the perception of sounds being amplfied at certain frequencies. For a given cavity at certain frequencies the sound waves "resonate" and aren't as atttenuated as the rest of the frequency spectrum. The reason behind this has to do with standing waves and is fairly complex, but the end result is that the C5 tends to resonate sound energy at about 1500 RPM, and, to a lesser extent, 3000 RPM. Since 1500 can be a typical cruise the droning noise can be quite annoying and given long enough exposure might cause hearing loss. I haven't been in many cars that have Borlas but I certainly have heard people complain about what a pain they are on a trip. Corsa'a early development had the same problem and they even went as far as to patent a system to cancel the resonance in their design. Just drive down the highway at 1500 RPM and really give a listen.

The resonance that most folks get with Borla's is due to the shorter mufflers they use. It can be described as a "drone" sound at @1500rpm. I have Borlas as well as LT headers. The sound can be reduced with some good insulation.

Resonance is sound at highway speeds the drown out normal conversation and the radio or otherwise drives you nuts!

My definition of resonance is the drone that I get when the car is in 6th gear going down the highway. Its caused by the sound vibrations of the exhaust flowing through the exhaust pipes. Adding an X-pipe helped quiet it down, but not completely eliminate it.

Richin Chicago describes it best here. I acquired an unacceptably loud roar, drone, call it what you will, at 1500 rpm, after installing headers and an X-pipe. Had previously installed B&B Rt66 mufflers but there was no change from the very acceptable resonance that came with the stock mufflers.
Anyhow the cure was to install straight thru resonators just aft of the X in the X-pipe and that took care of the problem.

Different parts of the car will oscillate at their own resonant frequency caused by the exhaust at a certain rpm. For example, the molded rear floor assembly can act like a loudspeaker, that is why adding damping material will help cut down on the noise. Adding two kinds of sound deadener had little effect on my car but adding diffusers before the x-pipe controlled the excess noise. Some C5's are better than others in the amount of resonance a new exhaust will produce.

or you could just get Corsa Indys and have ZERO resonance!

But, if I now go the H/C route ..and leave on my Indy's ... will I mess things up ?

Can the Indy's still help abate the resonance if I open up the exhaust system above them?

Also ... would it depend on whether I leave in Cats or remove them?

Tolerance for loud noises varies from person to person! Remember this quote" If it's too loud, your too old! I had a C4 that I installed some Dynomax mufflers on! The interior cabin resonance was so bad that it gave you a nausis feeling It was so bad that the wife hated to drive the car!

It sounded GREAT at any RPM other than 1200-1500 "RIGHT at cruising speed"

That is why I tell people who are looking to buy exhaust system componets to find someone with another C5 and listen to their system. If you like it COPY IT!

My offer still stands! Any one in the New England area that wants to listen to my exhaust, let me know and we can meet and make some NOISE!

If you just purchase something, you may end up regreting your purchase and get rid of it.

I JUST purchased and installed one of StainlessWorks complete exhaust systems. LT Headers, Random Tech CAT's 3" mid section with X pipe and Stainless works 3" mufflers. It has little or no resonance!

It sounds wickes at WOT and very cool at idle. I get complemens on it all of the time!

Drone or a hum is the best way I can describe it. I have a Magnaflow cat back with an x pipe and bullet style mufflers that are mounted before the rearend with noticeable drone, (hum, resonance what ever you want to call it), at certain rpm's. I think the further back the mufflers are mounted the less noticable it is.
