...thinking that my application the LUK stage 2 by Carolina Clutch kit would be the best. my car is stock pretty much, I may do some bolt ons down the road, but my car definately doesnt need the quadupled disc exedy that I've been hearing so much about. Its also a daily street driven car to and from work, to get the groceries although I do hit the drag strip. On my previous cars (import), lightened flywheels were good for auto x'ing but made a little bit of difficulty for daily driving. Also the gains werent that tremendous.
The price is $795 for the kit, including throwout bearing, alignment tool (oh boy!), pilot bearing, clutch and flywheel.
Any other options? Tom at Carolina clutch said the OEM flywheel doesnt take to machining too well.
I am using the LUK with alum flywheel. It holds like a champ, and revs very quick.
On the downiside, I am having balance issues and it is very annoying. It does not shake extremely bad, but trust me on this -- any balance issue frustrates you to no end. If it weren't for the balance issues I would love it, but that is a big if. Make sure you do your homework and have it balanced/installed properly.
I'm had some balace issues which subsided themselves, but now the clutch won't hold power over 5000 rpms. I'm now being told that you have to have the presure plate self adjsuter adjusted for max clamping force before you install it. There are no instructions in the box other than torque specs, but some of the tuners have run into this problem where the clutch is actually easier to push in than a stocker and it slips (exaclty like mine). The clutch is great BUT YOU MUST GO HAVE IT ZERO BALANCED TO CONFIRM AND MAKE SURE THE ADJSUTER IS DONE RIGHT! it'll save you the headaches I'm gonig through.
As for the aluminum flywheel the car is noticeable faster... at VIR I hit 150 on the back straight vs. 145 before. The car is bouncing off the 4th gear rev limiter in the middle of the straight whereas before I would just get to it before the braking zone.
As for drivability and low rpm stuff, I've noticed almost zero difference. Only time I noticed anything was in stopped traffic w/ the car rolling at idle in gear, it wanted to surge a hair, but did fine, just not a wellas with the iron flywheel.
I'd get the LUK 2 in a heartbeat, but make sure to have it zero'd and adjusted correctly to save the headache
