Patman, My lead was a "4" in 4400 miles with tracktime as you can see from above. Is that something to be concerned with?

Think I have about 5500 miles on my 5w-30 mobil 1 now with 2 trackdays at VIR back in July. My next trackday will not be till May, so I will run this oil at least 7500 to maybe 10k miles. I'm using a baldwin oil filter. I have a halltech trap intake too.

Will the baldwin filter be fine for 10k miles?

Most of my driving for now is 30 miles each way to work with 25 of that on the highway.

Thanks for all your great info.

Tin 0
Silver 0
Vanadium 0
Silicon 7

This run had lots of full throttle driving, including quarter mile runs and 10 dyno runs too. I've got a K&N oil filter and air filter on it too.

From what I've observed in numerous oil analysis reports, Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30 shows higher engine wear in the LS1 than German Castrol 0w30. The better choice if you want to stay with Mobil 1, is to use their 0w40. It will protect your bearings better at high oil temps, so that you don't see 12 ppm of lead in only 6000 miles. That is almost 12 times more bearing wear than I'm getting!

I wouldn't be concerned at all with 4ppm in 4400 miles with track driving, as it is a pretty decent number. Although as you can see from my report, it can be improved upon.

The Baldwin filter should be fine for 10k. The LS1 sized oil filters should make it to 12-14k before they'd need to be replaced, so most people won't even go anywhere near that long on the same oil anyhow.

Getting your oil analyzed is the perfect way to keep track of things, not only does it tell you the condition of the oil and how the engine is wearing, but it can also alert you to potential problems such as internal coolant leaks. This way you can fix things before they turn into bigger problems. I've seen a few instances where someone saw a tiny coolant leak that had just begun, and they were able to fix a leaky gasket before it ruined the engine. So the $20 spent on oil analysis can potentially save you hundreds of dollars! Besides, I simply find it fun to see how my oil is performing in my vehicles, and seeing how far I can safely push the oil change intervals.

Make sure you post the results when you get them! If you don't mind, could you post them on the bobistheoilguy.com message board too? We've got a special section on there just for posting oil analysis results:

Just for comparison purposes only. Red = my results.

I ran a Blackstone Lab oil analysis on my last 2003 ZO6 oil change.
Whatever lab NAPA uses. 2000 FRC
Mobil 1 5W-30 Mobil 1 10w30
Miles: 13,034 36,234
Miles on this oil: 6,245 8,458
Oil life on DIC: 4%
1 qt added since last oil change.
Some iron filings on the magnetic drain plug
Driven on average once a week + 2 hours on the track, driven only medium hard No Track on this oil, driven medium

Measured universal average
Aluminum 4 4 6
Chromium 2 1 1
Iron 37 14 37
Copper 155 41 44
Lead 12 7 11
Tin 3 2 0
Molybdenum 70 54 74
Nickel 2 1 0
Manganese 3 1 Not Tested
Silver 0 0 0
Titanium 0 0 0
Potassium 0 1 0
Boron 116 81 124
Silicon 33 9 10
Sodium 12 7 18
Calcium 3197 2227 2325
Magnesium 0 441 215
Phosphorus 799 756 737
Zinc 987 903 931
Barium 0 0 0

Viscosity @ 210 o f 60.7 55-62 @100c 10.31
Flash point 445 >365 Not tested
Fuel <0.5% < 2% <1
Antifreeze 0 0 NEG
Water 0 <0.1 0
Insolubles 0.3 <0.6 0.1

They interpreted this as normal due to new engine wear-in, but recommended the next change at 4,500 (or about 30% on the DIC).
Analysis: No corrective action required.

Better yet, send Blackstone $35 and ask for #46, Dyson Analysis which includes TBN. Then Terry Dyson will have a look at your oil and provide some professional insight.
