I bought the car used and only one of the remotes worked from the begining. The guy I bought the car from said that I could get on the internet to get the unused one to work. I never did though.
Now my original remote is dead. Do I need to just change the battery out or can I do something else? Thanks in advance...
try holding down both lock and unlock buttons while standing close to car, horn should beep after a few seconds to signal relearn. if that doesn't work try new battery.
The procedure that is mentioned above is called the resync procedure. If both have quit, I would change the batteries and conduct the FOB training session. You can train up to three fobs at one time. The instructions are in the owners manual and I think it is also in the tech tips section (dont quote me on that one)
The early FOBs (97-2000 are EXPENSIVE!! 2001 -2004 are easy to fins and not expensive.
If you get the fobs to work and then they quit after a short time, your main 12 Volt battery may be going bad.
Pull up all of the codes listed in the DIC and post them in this post.

Do you think my main 12 Volt battery is going dead...I also have a problem like this. Bought the car used, and the fob worked just fine, stopped working, so I replaced the battery and it worked just fine again...for awhile, since then Ive replaced the batter a couple times, and does the same thing, works awhile, then stops. I have been unable to use my key fob for quite a while and would like to know what the problem is??
Pull up all of the codes using the DIC! Please post them here and we should be able to decipher what is going on! Yes a main battery can and will cause FOB issues.
If you pull the codes up and find a whole lot of random "History" codes and a lot of NO COMMS codes, more than likley you battery is weak!
Each module has operting limits. 9 Volts DC - 16 Volts DC. If your battery is weak or has a bad cell, the reserve capacity is low and when the starter is first engaged the current it draws is very high and the battery voltage goes LOW. Sometimes too low to support many of the module. It only needs to go low for a mili second to set codes and reset the FOB internal codes.
Yea,,,I know,,,your car starts fine so how can it be a bad battery?? I thought the same thing. It came happen!!
Some of the modules that are more prone to the low voltage issues are:
Seat Control Module (SCM), LDCM & RDCM )left and right dor control modules, (RFA) Remote Function Actuator.
So,,,,,,,,, If you can borrow a battery and see if the new battery clears up the problem that would prove or disprove that theory. It was the battery on my 98 when my fobs went South!!

This is a very common problem with the factory fob. It's a bad design and many fail over and over..... changing batteries and doing the relearn process does not help. I junked the factory unit in favor of the Clifford system.... I've had it for over 2 years and it works flawlessly...... never a problem. It also will open the gas flap remotely..... just a superior system.
