My buddy has a 99 C5 6 spd. We are trying to swap out the shifter. How the heck do you get that t clip that holds the shift **** on, off?

Remove the plastic cap on top of the old handle. you will see a rectangler piece of metal. Grab it very tight with vise grip pliers and use a small hammer to tap UP on the vise grips. once you get the key out the **** will unscrew.

Use the following procedure for the easiest way I've found:

Note the type of vise-grip used. This is the key to avoiding damage to the ****.

Remove the "glass" roof before using the vice grips, just in case the tool slips!

A lot of ways available. I prefer to use a very small open-end wrench, one with the open end at about a 75-degree angle from the handle (not the more common 15-degrees or so), and lever out the pin. Less chance of damaging anything.
All the best.

also, try adding a few drops of WD40 where the "demon key" fits into the **** to help slipping it out.

You don't need to pull extremely hard or hammer hard. Just a steady tug and some firm taps and it'll move.
