I bought the Firestone RF's and have been very happy with them.

Something to consider with RF's - while it sounds appealing to be able to go 100 miles on a flat, what if you're on a long road trip?

Worse, a lot of tire dealers won't stock the tire. What do you drive on if you have to wait a week for delivery?

I'm looking for suggestions. I do not race the car. Basically it is my daily driver so $387 for a front tire and $408 for a back tire is a bit stiff. Since it is a daily driver, I am looking for a tire that will hold up in the rain. I live in the south so I want a tire with a hard rubber that will not melt off the car in the 95+ degree summer temperatures.

I had previously bought all my Yokohama tires from Sears. Several sets for my '91 Vette and the same for my 300Z. Unfortunately Sears no longer carries Yokohama's so I have to go elsewhere for them or use the less expensive alternatives they have (Sumitomo and Falken).

Anyone got any suggestions on tires or can comment on the Sumitomo or Falken brands.

I have the factory stock rims (P245/45ZR17 and P275/40ZR18) with the tire pressure sensors.

Thanks!
Danny Mc?
You can probably find a good used set of Runflats on the for sale forum, I guarantee they wont melt.. I got 43000 miles out of my first set of GY runflats.

I only agree with one thing, yes they look bad!

Don't get sucked in to believing "Michelin Pilot Sports ZPs are the best in every way." You will see many posts about them being great, but if you look, there are also many replies that there are people who don't like them. I thought I did enough research and believed what I read, bought them and wished I had not.

The Negatives
1. They do not "Blow away the GY EMTs", but they do blow away old used up EMTs.

2. They DO NOT handle better. They are All Season tires with a snow rating, so they will handle better in the snow. I knew within a mile I had made a mistake. The car felt like there was jello between the chassis and the road. I don't like how it handles. To much wishy washy feeling.

3. They are not quieter, ok maybe slightly, but not enough to make it a positive. They are quieter than, again, "old used up EMTs."

4. They look HORRIBLE! I have received many, "nice muddin tires" comments than I care to tell. Or, "Hey, you going off roading with that thing?"

5. They have a better wear rating. Why in the negative column you ask? Because that means I will have to keep them longer. I spent so much money on them I need to get some use out of them.

6. They look HORRIBLE! Oh, I already said that. But, it is worth mentioning again.

Ok ok, there are some positives which make them bearable. So I agree with more than one thing Beardown3 likes about them.

The Positives

1. They are MUCH smoother than the GYs. The whole car feels more luxerious due to a plusher ride. But a plusher ride also means less exact and direct. The bumps are soaked up much better and there is much less jarring. This is the #1 best thing about them except for it comes at the expence of handling.

2. Wet weather traction is great, it really is. I would assume the snow tractions is much better than the GYs also, but don't have to worry about that here in Florida.

3. They have a better wear rating. Yes I had to put it on the positives list too since if you like the tires it would be a positive.

My advices is this:

1. See them on a car (with stock sizes) in person. Pictures won't do.

2. If at all possible, drive a Vette that has them (with stock sizes).

If you like #1 and #2, then you will LOVE the tires. I wished I had not bought them.

just my .02, well actually I think I gave you a full 1.00

I would like to thank everyone for their feedback. I looked at the Michellin and Kuhmo tires and went with the Kuhmos. The decision breaker was purely financial. I bought the tires at Sears. Got the tires, alignment, balance, road hazard, oil change and some other minor things for right at $1,000.

The break in for the tires was a trip to Mardi Graz. Memphis to Mobile, Mobile to Louisianna and Louisianna back to Memphis in 10 days. Got hit in some bad rain on the way back to Memphis and the car held the road with no indications of slipping or sliding. I did notice some road noise about equal to that of the run flats that I previously had. Delco and Bose took care of that.

Thanks again for your help!

This is a very worthy testimonial... all the hype and placebo about a set of tires that was just purchased... is usually very self serving.. Oh My Michelin Pilots sports are dead quiet, it's like night and day etc... If someone has Michelin Pilot sports that are dead quiet , I and many other would like to hear them.. I have Michelin Pilot sports and was bitterly disappointed in their dead quiet sound as are many others.. nothing could be farther from the truth, quieter than the EMT's but nothing to jump up and down about.. certainly not a reason to buy them.. Bump steer all gone.. ??? no way... The car still jumps sideway when going over expansion joints on a bridge.. Again many people actually believe the things they post.. it's self serving, and try to convince other to jump on the same boat.. even if it is sinking.. just to prove they made the right decision.

When some one says something is not that great that they chose to buy is a very worthy and honest statement.. I tip my hat to you..
BTW tread wear rating are manufacturer specific, meaning they only compare one style of tire from the same manufacturer, a tread wear rating of 300 by one manufacturer can yeild 50 % more mileage than a tire from another manufacturer with a 420 tread wear rating.. so you have to know what the data means before you can analise it.

Just out of curiosity...which model did you get? I've been considering the Tech M550 A/S, but there isn't a lot of opinion on the forum about Avon tires.

A newbie resuscitated a thread from Feb.

And I thought ET was back in the mainstream of the action again!

Default Replacement Tires

I am running the Bridgestone Potenza RE050 run-flats up front and the RE050A run-flats in back on my 2001 C5 (tires purchased from Tirerack). This tire comes OEM on the Ferrari Enzo. They are good but the best all around tire I have had on the vette is the Firestone Firehawk run-flat. They are quiet and get outstanding wear.
