While traveling home Sat. night my fuel guage went went to empty and check guages came on. Going to carry it to the dealer. Any one know the fix for this? Thanks
I also had the same problem. Warranty replaced both sending units in the tank. Then GM came out with a service note about high sulphur in the gas. There is a reprogram of the computer GM has to correct this problem. The reprogram on mine was under warranty on day 2 after the notice was published by GM. My car just happened to be in the shop. However, in my area Louisiana,, the oil refinery put in the market gasoline with high sulphur that damaged the sending units of many cars. Shell and Exxon were both retailers of the high sulphur gas. Many claims were filed for replacement of damaged sending units.
I would recommed that immediately you change brand of gas. I have been using BP Amaco and not had any further problems. The BP Amaco does not come from the same refinery. This is not to say they could not have a problem but it hasn't happened with them in this area.
So summary.
1) Switch gas brands immediately
2) If the problem is not corrected see the dealer and ask about the reprogramming of the computer. If not under warranty about $75 to do this at the dealer.
3) If 1 and 2 don't correct the problem the only solution I know is to replace Both sending units and out of warranty is about $1500.
It is unfortunate but this problems "seems" to be high sulphur gasoline related. The oil companies "claim" their gasoline is within specifications, but that won't explain the high sulphur.
Best of luck.. Jim 99 Nassau blue with gauges that work.
Another thing many have tried and had success with is to add a higher quality fuel system cleaner - one with Techron seems to be the favorite but others work too. People usually have good luck after the first application, and some even add a preventative bottle every few tanks of gas.
The above two post are on the money! Jimcork1's write up is very factual and accurate!!
There is one other thing that you can do that may help and cant hurt even if it is not the cause of the problem. You can clean and inspect the fuel sender chassis ground. It is G-401 and located behind and inboard the drivers rear wheel.
Your problem is most likley the brand of fuel that you are using and sulpher comtamination on the sender unit sensing element. Before you spend megga dollars at the dealer. recommend you try the recommended work arounds that have corrected many a fuel sender issue.
