My left headlamp wasn't going down all the way. I ordered the brass gear and installed it.
Now, for some reason, the headlamp cycles 3 or 4 entire physical revolutions before coming to a stop.
I took the gear right off the motor assy and tried the headlamps. While the pass. side only runs for the brief moment it takes to open the headlamp, the driver's side runs for at least 10 times that amount of time.
I think the motor is screwed up. Now when I turn the parking lights on, the headlamps open and come on. (except the drivers side is still not stopping)
When I unplug it, the right side works correctly. I just picked up a new motor, we'll see.
There are no micro switches. The motors are controlled by the headlight motor control module. It is located under the passengers headlight and it is mounted on the front frame bulkhead under the headlight assembly.
Please let me get home from work and dig into the books to give you specifics. There is also a TSB that describes a problem with some plastic limit stops that cause one of the light motors to do what you describe. As soon as I get home i will provide you with the TSB and some electrical info on the problem.
you can't just plug it in.you have to bolt it up[make sure you have the linkage to motor relationship right].the headlamp control module will then learn open/close.i think there is a tsb on this, but am not sure.
A friend of mine with a 98 had a similar problem. Drivers motor wouldn't go up and down all the time. He kept using it before I got a chance to look at it. I found the control module had a crack in it and water got inside it and the connector, too. Basically fried it. When it went, it took his drivers motor with it. He ended up replacing both and it worked fint.
Okay, not sure exactly what happened but among the 189 times I've taken the motor assy out of the headlamp assy... it must have sync'd correctly. All of a sudden, it is working like it should.
I honestly don't know what I did wrong but at least I don't have to spend the 200 bucks on a new motor.
