When I ordered the 1SB I thought the same way. Now, I can't drive without it. It helps a lot to keep an eye on #1 speed and my favorite....radio station!
the HUD would be worth the money as a standalone option (but the rest of the 1SB package is not IMO-although if I werent a lowly law student I'd of bought it anyways)
I sat in a HUD-Vette at the dealer, I'm too tall for it, had to scrunch down to see it, so wouldn't buy it myself but I thought "amazing technology, very worthwhile having".
I've had alphanumeric speedo's on both cars and bikes, IMHO way-better than sweep-needles.
radio station? can you change the HUD display without taking hands off the wheel?
No. You would have to take one hand off to punch the page button. Why HUD? When you're winding out 400HP, the HUD tells when it's time to shift with a big up Arrow. It's worth it for that alone. You don't really have time to look down at the tack.

I had it in my C5 and would not buy a Vette without it.
Definitely worth extra $. I bought the 1sb package just to get the telescoping steering wheel. At first I thought there would be alot of features that I didn't use, but after a few months I'm glad I have them all. I probably would have skipped a few of them if they weren't offered in a package only. I think GM knows this, thus the $4300 1sb package.
I wish it were a separate option and not part of a package with things I didn't actually want (heated seats, in the South?), but it is definitely cool. The major advantage is you don't have to take your eyes off the road to check speed, tach, or oil pressure. If in addition you're getting to be the age where your arms aren't long enough for reading, it is focused at infinity, so you don't need to get out your reading glasses to see it clearly.
Then you'd probably be better off without it. I let a friend of mine drive both my C5 and C6 and he found the HUD to be an annoyance. Me, I couldn't be without it. Each to their own.
