I do not understand why so many people here at the forum complain about extra costs that are revealed apparently AFTER the deal is made. When I make a deal, before signing or agreeing to anything, I ask for the FINAL TOTAL figure, with all fees, tax, etc included... and then based upon THAT figure, I either consent and sign, or disapprove.
If I consent to a final figure, I'll sign and am prepared to pay the total amount agreed upon, not a penny more. Isn't this the way all deals are made? Why are so many people here reporting what seems to be last minute extra charges getting tacked on? These people were either very sloppy in making their deal, or the salespeople in these instances are serious thieves.
Tip... when you make a deal, ask for the TOTAL. To make sure all is understood, ask the salesman once again... "This is the total figure, all taxes, all fees etc included, yes? No extra hidden fees, correct?" Make certain that you establish a final total bottom line figure. Then, repeat the total figure and clearly state that you are prepared to pay that total figure and not a penny more. Period. Done. Both you and the salesperson should sign a document that lists the total price. This should eliminate any last minute unpleasant surprises.
I am glad to report that I had a very pleasant experience at my Corvette dealer (Ramp). I was treated with respect the entire time, no hidden surprises, no extra bogus fees, a final price was quickly agreed upon and that was it. Very smooth and pleasant transaction.
Do the words B.S. RING A BELL??What state are you in??there is no such thing as title prep!!!When the car is new,the dealer gets a C OF O,which is a certifacate of origin.THAT'S THE NEW CAR'S TITLE FROM MANUFACTURER.That goes w/paperwork to DMV along with the other forms, all covered under the DMV/DOC FEES.$1589 IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!I sell cars, and There is no such fee that i've ever heard of!Even in NEW YORK,one of the most expensive, Charge you for every damn thing they can think of state's,there's no 1500 dollar fee for that.It usually costs a new car buyer, with new plates, around 250 bucks for ALL FEES ASSOCIATED WITH DMV AND THE CAR ITSELF,and that just went up to that price on oct 1st.I'd walk away.
I would certainly inquire. You're not getting anything until you sign a contract--hopefully you understand all the numbers before you sign the dotted line.

No it isn't normal by any means.
The reason that it seems that you are getting hosed is because this dealer is trying to slip one into you :o
Don't let your emotions take over and suck you into this transaction. That is what this dealer is counting on. Tell the dealer that you don't need any title preparation and that you will take the manufacturer's certificate of origin to the DMV yourself. This is pure dealer and added dealer profit.

Well, welcome to the forum and oh yeah, who the hell is the dealer?
I think you're being scammed. In Georgia, title transfer costs $20 and a new tag costs $12. Of course you have to pay sales tax too, but that should be listed separately.
Don't go through with the deal until your dealer explains exactly what this fee is for. The above about the statement of origin is correct. Just cancel the fee and get the statement of origin from him, the bill of sale, and go down to you motor vehicle department to pay your tax and register your vehicle yourself. It doesn't take long and you will see how simple the process is.
