time to find a new tint shop. Alta Mere has always done good work for me. The hatch of my C6 looks great.
Alta Mere in Plano does nice work too. I've been several places over the years - they ALL have some difficult with the dot matrix near the top. Some will use a strip of black vinyl; others will paint black paint, while others will use clear Elmers, then really work it with heat gun to dry...
The hatch glass is definitely a PITA. I used a tint company that the dealership uses....they come to the dealership when needed and do the work there. The guy who did mine said he's done so many Corvettes he's lost count and he still had problems getting the rear glass the way he wanted. After getting the hatch glass almost done he ripped it all out and started over. When finished there was a small imperfection toward the top of the dot matrix which I was mostly able to 'massage' away over the next few days. The slight imperfection that remained isn't a big deal for me as it doesn't detract from the overall appearance of the car.
I wouldn't do just the side windows and not the hatch. So much heat comes through the rear glass IMO it's essential to do. If you demand total perfection have them apply black vinyl or perhaps sand the dot matrix flat.
I'm glad this thread got started. Is it possible to do the rear window in one piece, or did they join two separate sheets and try to hide the join behind a defrost line?
My tint company applied 3M black chrome tint to the rear window as a one piece application. The installation looks great. I have no idea how long it took, but they asked and I allowed them to keep it all day (9:00 am in/5:00 pm out). I surmise it was to be sure I did not diddle their installation as the adhesive was in the most fragile state.
The same day they tinted a C5. Both tint jobs looked superb. Both rear windows appeared to be a one piece installation.
My tint guy installed vinyl over the dots. Looks ok to me. High end tint shop been around for many years and does a lot of dealership BMW, Porsche and Benz cars.
The rear is hard, but NOT 5.5 hours hard... That tinter needs some help. Also make sure they use one solid piece of film. Some ghetto tinters will use multiple pieces... Find another guy.
