GM will likely fold to shed its unfunded pension liablilities, billions of dollars, also health care costs are crippling the company so losses will continue. Concessions from unions will not enough. They will emerge leaner and meaner but in the medium term collapse is inevitable. I did my part and bought a c6 today. Here 's to the General.

But the same would be for the other auto makers coming in here. Toyota just opened two new plants, BMW is bringing a plant, Mercedes another one. Honda will be doing two - they will need parts from someone.

These jobs won't pay as much as Ford or GM - but they are there.

GM won't survive as long as it must adhere to the present contract with the UAW. Competitors don't have high legacy costs or the Job Bank to contend with.

Contract negotiations in 2007 will be nasty. If I were buying a GM car built at that time, quality of construction would be a concern. After an employee loses at least a third of his pay and benefits, I'm sure he won't be thinking about doing a good job.

In Germany unions are working with management to solve problems and they are making progress. Here, the attitude of the UAW is adversarial. This attitude is a carryover from the days of Walter Reuther and will spell death for GM if it doesn't change.

If GM uses Chapter 11 to get out from under the burden of it's contract costs it will have a new set of problems. Who wants to buy a car from a company that has declared bankruptcy.

Management did more than it's share in creating GM's problems, but non of that matters at this point. The only thing that is important is that both management and labor realize they are in this together. The survival of GM depends on it.

From what I see, Washington has no interest in bailing out the auto industry. There will be an auto industry in this country whether GM and Ford survive or not.

No company is too big to go out of business and the outlook for both GM and Ford is not good.

It's not going to happen...But, they have some tough choices ahead. On the positive side, they have good product with more in the pipeline and they've started down the path to getting their costs under control. Worldwide sales are increasing (they've displaced VW as the top dog in China)...they just need to get their act together in North America.

While I want to see GM succeed, and I'm sure they will even if they have to do the Chrysler thing with the Gov't, I would definitely like to see Corvette as a separate Franchise too.

If you believe their dealers all GM has to do is produce about 50,000 ZO6's a year and the company is saved! Oh yea... they'd also have to sell them too!

Seriously GM is in big trouble and could well go Chapter 11 in 3 or 4 years if losses keep mounting. Don't look for the govt to bail them out. Contrary to popular belief GM doesn't have an unlimited money supply either. It's exactly why they just sold a lot of 12 month bonds yielding 10% which are rated about the same as junk bonds. Heck, I even bought some so I hope they last long enough to pay them off.

Look at United Airlines - it's out of chapter 11 with a lower cost stucture and ready to roll.

Buying an airline ticket is not the same as buying a car. A one flight ticket is not in the same category as buying a long term durable product with a warranty. The two cannot be compared. The main reason GM is trying to stay away from Chapter 11 is they know a lot of potential customers will not come in the showroom after a declaration of bankruptcy.
