You are almost right. And I quote from page 62 of the 1953-2006 Corvette Black Book: "The 454ci LS6 engine with 425hp was a detuned version of 1970's planned, but cancelled 460hp LS7. LS6 was designed to operate on low-lead fuel, but since a comparable engine was not available in 1970, it won the horsepower race for the two years despite its lower octane appetite. It featured aluminum heads and could be ordered with an automatic transmission, although not when combined with the ZR2 package."
