In another thread one member reported noticing the roof top ballooning out slightly when the rear hatch was dropped down somewhat hard (with windows shut). The pressure in the cabin when dropping the hatch hard with windows shut apparently puts some decent force against the roof panel which could speed up a potential roof delamination. The pressure created is essentially trying to blow the roof skin off. Not good. With this in mind, I think it's wise to refrain from dropping the hatch down from 10 inches or whatever unless the windows are open. If the windows are closed, lower the hatch down slowly and gently until it just touches the latch, then push down until the latch engages and sucks the hatch into place.
I don't know if the latch is too weak, the action too slow, the finger too short, or what -- but it would be interesting if somebody took this on as either an undergraduate engineering problem to resolve, or a forum member was to play with mods to see what could be done through experimentation.
I'd be willing to bet that just the right mod could overcome the irregular functioning of ALL C6 hatches.
Just drill a couple of 2" holes in the floor of the cargo area with a hole saw to let the air out and the hatch will shut every time.
With the doors and windows closed, mine will not latch unless I slam it pretty hard, and I do not believe that was intended nor is it good for the latch. I lower mine with the handle, and then push down gently until the assist pulls it down. Even though I have to touch the car, this is an improvement over the C5, which I either had to slam hard or lower and then push down rather sharply to get it to latch. The C6 assist allows gentle pressure as opposed to a violent slam or shove. Although it is not clear, the 2006 manual seems to say gentle push, not slam:
Man, I must have an unique car as my hatch closes just like the manual says..
I really wish my Z06 came with this feature. Everytime I push down on the deck lid, I feel like it's going to crack...
~Mongo close hatch~
I just gently lower the hatch to the gasket, then jump up & down on the glass until it seats properly. Always wear shoes (never boots!) Oh crap, this is the internet!
I found this thread from a search on the topic because mine doesn't seem to close like it used to and it is only 1 week old. But maybe it shut by dropping it before because a door was open or something. Will have to investigate when I return home. But regardless......I do hate having to give it that extra CPR type of motion to finish the close.
